My Brainwavz HM5 broke! What should I upgrade to?

Hey, folks. Finally found a reason to register. :)

The plastic on the hinges of my Brainwavz HM5 started to crack recently, and after trying numerous solutions -- from duct tape to epoxy -- I'm about ready to move on. As a last resort, I contacted the headphone manufacturer about ordering a replacement part, but I'm not optimistic.

Anyway, point is, I'm thinking about new headphones. I like the features that my Brainwavz HM5 offered: great sound quality; closed, over-ear design; decent isolation; decent soundstage; neutral; affordable.

But since the unit fell apart after just 15 months, I won't be buying another pair.

I'm willing to spend $200-$250 on something new, with a similar set of features. The SoundMAGIC HP100 is a strong contender, but I'd like to hear about other suggestions. :)

I can spend more money if you know about something incredible that meets my specifications.

Thanks!

The HP100 does seem like a good upgrade for you that keeps many of the features that you want.

Cool. Do you have any personal experience with these cans? It's strange that they have so few customer reviews- that's my only reservation.

I've been toying with buying the HP100. They are often compared with the K550s, which I do have and love (but would be happy to end up with something a little bit better). They clearly have the general characteristics you have described based on everything I have read. For instance, http://noblehifi.blogspot.com/2012/10/soundmagic-hp100-review.html

You would be well-served by a pair of Sennheiser Momentums (albeit bassy sounding) or NAD VISO HP50s if you can find them second-hand for your budget. You don't necessarily have to spend up to $200-250 if you want good sound quality. If you crave neutral sound above all else, there's no shame in picking Sony MDR-V6s.

Someone managed to break a pair of HM5s? That's quite an accomplishment, they're easily the toughest headphones I own.

In light of this, I'd recommend the V-Moda M100 or Sennheiser HD-25/Amperior. The Momentum is also a good option, along with the Beyerdynamic DT770.
