Choosing between philips fidelio x1 and Q701 headpohones

I need help choosing between the Philips Fidelio x1 and Q701 headphones. My budget is 300 so if you can recommend an alternative please do. I've been using my fiio e18 with my tablet playing 320 kbps music with my Samson sr850 and I'm looking to upgrade to more refined headphones. I listen to mostly dubstep j rock and classical music so I want a headphone with good bass but not overpowering muddy or quantity wise bass. I need quality bass with a good rumble when I turn up the volume. But I also want headphones that will give me everything from my music and then some so I can't choose between the two. Because everyone says the q701 lack bass and the Philips fidelio x1 are not very audiophile like I'm having a very hard time choosing between the two. I want to know which one will give me the best experience compared to the sr850. I might also consider the hifiman he 400. And I will also be going outside with them so don't criticize me.

I purchased both to decide for myself.  I like the Q701 far better.  Comparing the two in stock form was difficult because they have such different sound signatures.  The Q701 is amazingly detailed and sparkly but the bass, while very controlled, is pretty aenemic.  The X1 is super fun, with a huge amount of bass and enough details in the highs and mids to be passable, but the bass feels really slow and loose after the Q701.

I really wanted something just slightly on the bassier side of the Q701.  Then I did the (reversible) bass port mod on the Q701.  Took all of 5 minutes.  The sound didn't change much, but it brought the bass a lot more forward with even more extension.  It was exactly what I was looking for.  I knew within minutes that it was no contest and the X1 was going away.

The detail and clarity of the Q701 is amazing to begin with.  When you get the bass to an acceptable level, while still being really controlled and detailed, it's nearly perfect for me.  Amp it for another significant jump in quality... I'm in heaven with it.

BTW, you can get used ones in the $150-175 range if you check out the forums here or Amazon Warehouse Deals.  At that price, it's a no-brainer IMO.

EDIT - Oh yeah, and be prepared to get rid of any MP3's at less than 320kpbs quality.  You WILL hear the flaws.

Sounds awesome so I guess I'll go with the q701 and just use bass boost on my fiio e18 and the music app I'm using called maven. Although I really like how the x1's look but I'm willing to sacrifice looks for sound.  But I need to know how the Samson sr850 compare to the q701 in terms of bass, mids, high etc also I don't like harsh treble so will the q701 have crisp treble?

You should go with the HE-400. I'm listening to them right now smily_headphones1.gif

They have extremely textured bass. Most people have never heard bass with this kind of transient response. Go listen to a $1200 B&W or Paradigm sealed sub at a high end audio store. That will give you some idea of what to expect.

Overall detail to me on the HE-400s easily equals (if not exceeds) the Q701s, but not as much treble emphasis. Q701s definitely have a bigger soundstage, but the HE-400 has good soundstage and imaging.

And right now, razordog has them for $249 with their $50 rebate.

The he400 was my third choice but I need to know if my fiio e18 will drive them to defining levels?

I don't know what "defining levels" mean. But the Q701s are hard to drive, too.

I'm sure that the HE-400s will sound very good on the E18 and play fairly loud. That doesn't meant that they might not benefit from a more powerful amp. Depends on how loud you listen and what kind of music you are listening to. Heavy bass music can take some power to reproduce.

I mean that I like listening to my music at loud volumes to get a real kick from the dubstep I like. The he400 are planar magnetic so I've heard they need a lot of power and I don't plan on getting an additional amps to go with them.

Well, what I meant was amount of volume is relative to the person. Loud means different things to everyone, and it's practically impossible to communicate unless you know how many db you like to listen at (lol).

I don't know really know how to point out volume from decibels of sound pressure level lol

Are you serious? Do you really know how loud 115db is? That's far louder than theater reference volume. LOL

Yes I just looked it up sorry my mistake. So I'll be honest I don't know much about decibels in sound pressure level so can we just get back to the headphones please. I think I will go with the q701 because I only want to spend around 200 and on amazon its 200$ but the he400 are very tempting too. So I do want good bass and with that said the he400 looks like my best choice

You might just do some research on both to see how well they pair with the E18.  There should be plenty of info on head-fi about it.  I haven't heard the HE-400 yet so I can't really comment on how it compares.

Thank you I'll do that but for now my money's on the q701 because I also plan to use these at school in music class with my electronic keyboard and with fl studio in the future. So I will need professional or something that comes close type of headphones. But for the most part I just want to enjoy my music so the he400 sounds more like a winner for me and people say they are not hard to drive.

After some careful consideration I think I will buy the Philips Fidelio x1. Because they have everything in a headphone I could ask for but maybe next time I will purchase the q701. The x1 are comfortable looking, have good bass, tilted drivers, moderate impedance and are made with excellent  materials. But I REALLY need to know how far apart in sound quality are the x1 and Samson sr850 so can someone please give a comparison. I don't care how you compare them just do it please.

I have not heard either, but the Samson are considered an excellent $50 headphone on Head-Fi; the X1 an excellent $250 headphone. I have no doubt that the X1s will be "far apart" in better sound quality. smily_headphones1.gif
