First let me state I am normally not a headphone guy. They usually bother my ears after a short time, (I have 770's I use for recording music) but after repeatedly trying the HD800's, the open air design and unique driver placement seemed to agree with me, at least in short demos.
I noticed the tipped up treble, but after reading of the Anaxilus mod, I decided to take the plunge today and order a barely broken in used set for $925 which will be here soon.
My system is rather high end including TAD CR1 speakers, A Perfectwave II DAC (replacing the inner boards with the new groundbreaking Directstream DAC in the next 2 weeks) TTweights Momentum turntabale/ Strain Guage Cart, and an Atmasphere MP-1 tube balanced preamp. Atmasphere has told me that the preamp (which has 600 ohm balanced outputs) can actually function as a very high end headphone amp, but I have never tried it due to not having the correct cables.
I would love to be able to hear this preamp powering the HD800's (anyone in NYC have HD800 cables to balanced female XLR's they'd like to try)? I could probably adapt male XLR cables.
Baring the ability to try this out, is it worth buying custom cables to try this non traditional setup, or is it better to put the money into a proper headphone amp (like to stay below $1K) and just use the stock Sennheiser cables (for now anyway)?
Has anyone every used a high end preamp's outs as a headphone amp?
