Welcome & Introduction for DC/VA/MD Head-Fiers

Thread Starter

Greetings!  I just thought I'd get the ball rolling with a 'meet the head-fiers of the DC metropolitan area' thread.  Just post a brief introduction with some info about yourself (area you live in, profession, other interests, your audio rig, your head-fi journey, etc.) or if you'd be interested in organizing, participating in or know of any local events happening that you'd like to share.

There's currently a thread for the upcoming Capital Audio Festival. As I'm sure most of you know about by now, there will be a section dedicated to head-fi's own event CanMania!  Hopefully this will be the first of many in partnership with the CAF, so feel free to invite anyone else in the area out to the festivities!

My name is Ryan - I currently live in the Chantilly/Fairfax area and work in Alexandria as an IT guy for a government contractor.

Non-Audio Interests: Fine Arts, PC Gaming, DIY, Kayaking, Board Games, Riflery, Cycling

My regularly used headphone setups include the following:

Desktop - PC digital-out via Coax S/PDIF > BJC Belden 1694A Coax > Jolida Glass FX Tube DAC w/ RCA 5751 > 'The Shoebox' SET amp w/ JJ ECC99 & GE 5751 > DIY SPC HiFiMan Cable > HE-500 w/ jergpads 2.5 and fuzzor mod

Portable - iBasso DX50 > TDK BA200 w/ DIY dual-flange tips using EarPeace earplugs & InEar StageDiver 3 w/ Ortofon tips

Upcoming Gear - Assembling a new SET amp based off the Western Electric 91A design using 2A3/6SJ7 tubes.  It'll be a speaker amp for my Celestion 3 near-field monitor speakers w/ headphone output stage to power the HE-500 (should be ready for the CanMania!)

I've been a head-fi member since 9/13/12, so about a year and a half now.  I first became interested in the hobby based on my life long love for music and audio in general as influenced by my father's love of classic and progressive rock.  It has caused me to have a wide variety of musical interests and I always love to hear something new and inventive.  Based on a cousin's recommendation, my first 'well regarded headphone' about 15 years ago (I'm 28 now) was the Koss Porta Pro, of which I have owned 3 pairs up until now, so that is the headphone I have the most experience with.  I never had the means to have good, quality gear until more recently but my dad's vintage setup has clearly had an influence.  After discovering head-fi on a whim through another forum, I got hooked.  Being the tech/hardware researcher I've always been at heart, I read as much information as I could - I won't bore with all the details but along with my enjoyment of DIY and refinement in sound, I've been led to my current rigs above.  There came a point where I wanted to replicate recorded audio in the most realistic and enjoyable way to my ears as one of my favorite past times is to attend concerts and hear live music.  I wouldn't consider myself a 'skilled musician' but I have played instruments in the past while I was in school.  It's something I should probably pick back up because it's a lot of fun but I think that has also had an effect on me and how I listen to music as well.  There are a variety of audiophiles out there ranging from technical professionals to hobbyists, all I imagine are general lovers of music, which is something I really love about the community...it's dynamic and evolving.  There's nothing better than sharing your own experiences with others and vice-versa!

Hey y'all!

I'm Warren, and I'm actually out here in SoCal.  But perhaps there is room for me to be an honorary DC/VA/MD Head-Fier?  Love DC & VA, and I've got family out in Baltimore.

I joined Head-Fi back in 2011, but lurked for almost a year.  Then I started posting to make up for lost time, and now I'm a mod.  What can I say?  I love the hobby and the community, and want to see both grow and flourish!

P.S. - Ryan, would it blow your mind if I told you that Jolida was working on a headphone amp?  I haven't heard it, but I've seen pics of the prototype.  Let's just say that it gives the Hugo a good run for its money in terms of that Christmas tree light motif.

Honorary members are always welcome!  I know a lot of people travel to and from here regularly.

The Glass FX Headphone Amp is actually available on Amazon, through authorized dealers and directly from Jolida currently, but I've not seen or heard it either.  They're using the same chassis as the DAC which is nice.  Also, the latest version of the DAC (Mk III) comes with a small headphone amp too.  Unfortunately, no custom LED fanciness without modding :p

Hi Mitchell,

Glad to meet ya!  BTW, how do you like the Bravo?  I've been meaning to try it out.  A buddy of mine here keeps wanting me to try a K Works Bravissimo as well (suped-up Bravo) but I haven't gotten around to it.  Ever heard or heard of it?

That looks really cool - but Its a bit expensive for my tastes. I have a Bravo v3 and I do like it. Sometimes I find it lacking in bass/lowmids, although EQ helps. I use it with my 600ohm sennheiser hd420s and my Westone UM3x which is quite the stretch but is interesting.

Hey guys,

I'm Darryl, I guess you can call me an old head.  I'll be the big 45 in December.

I'm from DC.  Uptown NW area near Walter Reed Hospital.  I've been working for the EPA for the past 14 years in downtown DC.  I took a position still with the EPA in Cincinnati about 4 years ago.  Now trying to move back to DC.

I'm an avid HE-6 owner.  Now trying to get into the Stax gear.  It's been a long hard road.  Guys and Gals be very carful with who you deal with money wise on these sites.  I got took for $4K by a very well known user / builder on here.  "Lil Knight" He was building me a KGSSHV and have now been MIA for more than 5 months.  That's a pretty big set back.  Now I'm awaiting a BHSE from Justin - you know how long those waits can be.

Have fun guys

Darryl.

Welcome!  You can always be young at heart... I plan to be :p

The e-stat route is certainly a commitment.  Quite frankly, of all I've heard so far the HE60 has been my favorite, the tonality is soo precise and it's very much like a e-stat super HD600.  I see you have acquired a SR007 MKI, which is also among my favorites (probably second favorite).  A friend of mine, Spriggs, just managed to pick up a SR-404 LE which I'm pretty jealous of haha but now I'll finally get to hear it!  That truly is a shame regarding your KGSSHV situation.  Benefit of the doubt, something could have happened to him and I really hope he didn't just 'jump ship' but I see he does still log in, as recently as yesterday...very uncool.  Definitely no good for the community as a whole too :( I hope you can at least manage a refund at some point and the same goes for the others that appear to be waiting.  Headamp has a bit of a wait as well, but on the bright side we know Justin is reliable.

hi Darryl,

good to see you here and glad you are trying to get back to DC full time. I was wondering what that message on your sig was all about (WHERE is my amp). What a shame!

Anyway, I guess I did not properly introduce myself. My name is Viktor. I am also an avid HE6 owner, although having the DNA Stratus has me reaching for my HD800 a bit more. Still PROPERLY driven HE6 is my fav can, aside from TOTL Stax set ups. For a while I was considering the BHSE and sr009/sr007 but the costs scared me away. I had to choose between putting money away for my daughter vs. HPs. Daughter won. Besides, I am quite happy with my current HP rigs.

Otherwise you an check my profile for other bits of other info.

Hey, I'm Michael. I live in the Montgomery county area, I have a fairly modest desktop setup, I am currently running a Schiit Magni/Modi stack with AKG K712 Pro headphones. I am using the stock cables but am going to be setting aside some time for a DIY braided cable at some point. I mainly use my setup for every day computer use, some light gaming, and for watching movies and TV.

I have a (broken) pair of Denon AH-D2000s that I would at some point like to upgrade to full Lawton Mod LA-D2000s.

Before my current setup I had Beyerdynamic Custom one pros to a Fiio E10 amp/DAC.
