My home rig is a recent-model Audio-gd NFB-28 with the TCXO upgrades (new hi-res/DSD-capable USB driver) paired with Beyerdynamic T1 balanced, but I also have a SE adapter, so I'll compare to that setup and also try the T1's with the DX-90 and see how they go.  I also have the Grado SR-125i and Beyerdynamic DT-880 250-ohm to try.

I'm enjoying my T1 plugged in straight to DX90. I'll be curious to see your impressions.

@headwhacker,

That's great to know, Thanks! smily_headphones1.gif Now I'm even more eager to receive my DX-90. tongue.gif

@jamato8,

Your welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy Steph Johnson's music! Thank You for all of your detailed information and impressions regarding the DX-90. I have to say...you are mostly to blame for my new purchase. tongue.gif But I'm sure that I'll love it. Definitely can't be any worse than what I have now for portable use. wink.gif Now I just need some recommendations for comfortable, accurate IEMs/CIEMs to pair with it <=$350.

Driving to the bank this evening, I was listening to an album I have heard a hundred times (I know this is so cliche, but if I can't tell you guys - who do I tell? My wife CGAS) Genesis: Selling England By The Pound - the song "Firth Of Fifth" - during Peter Gabriel's flute solo I had never noticed him inhale between notes - maybe it was always there, but I never heard them separately like this before. Now Gabriel isn't Ian Anderson, who breathes in at 96db - Gabriel tries to be unobtrusive. With the DX90, he doesn't get away with it.

GREAT album and Track! I hear what you are describing on both my home HP rig and home loudspeaker setup, so I'll make a note to myself to listen for this when I receive my DX-90. Thanks for the tip! Also check for foot taps in Livingston Taylor's "Grandma's Hands". Also FYI, a lot of the Mappleshade discs have subtle details like that which will be buried/missed unless you have a very resolving playback chain. I'm also looking forward to listening to a WAV rip of the Arne Domnérus / Lars Erstrand "Live is Life" 32-bit mastered disc (on Proprius label/Elusive Disc), especially the drum solo in the track, "Drum Boogie".

To me, low gain brings most emotions out of 846. Mids/vocal is in a smooth upfront position. For instrumentals, I would set it on mid gain. 3. 846 has the ability to deliver very impactful bass that I could feel much shake in the ear canal. But when I hear that kind of bass, other frequencies are also sacrificed. Dx90 is not driving 846 towards that way. The bass is accurate and can go deep but not impactful, I would say. 4. I had different volume on L/R channels on low gain, after 2 nights' burn-in (or some power on and offs?), the problem is gone.

Quick impressions:
- high quality leather same as their AK cases
- fit is perfect and very classy red velvet inner lining
- cutouts are precise and all buttons operate as smoothly as with the stock silicone case
- it is thicker than the silicone case and increase overall thickness of the unit to just about 2cm
- right scrollbar and home button on upper right corner, while not an issue for me, may cause difficulty for those who already find them too thin and small to touch

And oh of course it sounds much better now! ;p

Just ordered sony XBA H3, will let you know how it fares.

I have xba 4 and they are the best paired with dx90 above all the portables I used. Still I find the high medium edgy, and after some eq, it's pretty nice.
