Ortofon e-Q8 Impressions Thread (new 2014 successor of the e-Q7 / e-Q5) - Page 4
Head-Fi's Best Sellers
You want one? You just had to ask :D. I can pass it to you.
I'll pass that to you along with the other stuff you're asking for. In addition, I'll pass you the e-Q5 & e-Q7, and Hd-7 (the desktop amp). You can compare the e-Q5/7 along with the 8 you already have side-by-side with the Ortofon amps. Do feel free to keep the Ortofons as long as you write up something about it please :D.
I'm not a big fan of hiss in amps, especially ones that were made for earphones. Understandably, ortofon also have headphones, but fewer people know of them, and I have never seen the amp and their DJ headphones displayed together.
I thought their headphone is just an OEM from ultrasone. The thing with the hiss on the ortofon amp is once the music plays we will sort of get used to it. The hiss almost non-audible with dynamic IEM. For example pair it with something like ES10 man the sound is so yummy. Matter of fact I am using it right now with DD socket 1 and ES10! Maybe I am emotional but I like how ES10 sounds out of that combo on the same level as HUGO.
Yes, their DJ headphones are Ultrasone OEM cans. I guess I'm always looking for holistically designed products. If an amp is released from a company that makes earphones, it should pair perfectly with those IEMs, including hiss levels, etc. I'm looking forward to trying it out, but... we'll see. I'm pretty sold on the e-Q8 and the e-Q5, so their amps may be part and parcel of the overall 'like'.
They are all very different to one another. I honestly think E-Q8 with an O2 can satisfy the most demanding audiophile who is into jazz or cello solo. It has a full and width sound, a sound that has outclassed my Dita truth on number of occasion.
To my ears they scale up the best out of all my gears.
So it's been weeks now and I want to update. I love the e-Q8. But they are harder to love earphones than any hitherto ortofon. In particular, you won't get ANY bass AT ALL from them without a good source or amp. What do I mean by 'good'? Simply something with a high-current low-Ω output. In terms of actual feel and presence, e-Q8 bass has a wider step than e-Q7 bass. More presence, but same speed. Slightly smoother over the wider area. But if you are plugging into your smartphone, you will hear nothing. I took a mate to e-earphone recently. He loved the e-Q7, but hated the e-Q8. He was listening from a Sony or LG or some other big Android phone. I was listening through Anak's AK240.
"No bass?" I asked.
And I had thought that at first.
Anyway, ortofon still comes across as the most luxurious of earphone companies in the price range. The look, feel, fit, and utility of these phones- all tip top. SQ is excellent if you have a good amp or player. The new iPod nano should do the trick. The iPod shuffle 1G does, but it hisses too much. Which reminds me, this thing is so damn sensitive. That is a problem with portable amps with too high of gains. Anyway, hats off to ortofon. It took me longer than I thought, but I got there. LOVE these.
