DAP-off: Astell&Kern AK240, HiFiMAN HM-901, Sony ZX-1, FiiO X5 + Chord Hugo & Calyx M from June. - Page 30

Yeah, it's a beefy device, and it drains fast.  Thankfully, I haven't had ui trouble with the Hibino version 8.03.  If it only responds quick when user changes to another song, and a usb DAC function, I would be fully satisfied.  If I put sonic quality above all else, it's just an amazing device.  I'm quite impressed with the ES9018(8 channel non-mobile version) over the mobile chips or the -2M

I wonder if there is a miniature ES9018(8 channel non-mobile version) DAC only implementation size of the ODAC?  I just got the Vorzuge pure ii amp which I think is phenomenal and pairs well with anything and is the most transparent I've heard, would work quite well portably combining a 9018 and with my Galaxy S4.

Too bad they dont make a higher end model of DX100....and release the DX90...Same for Hifiman, there is no higher end than HM-901....only iriver has the ambition to take over thr world

FWIW, I had time to evaluate the HM-901 and other DAPs. I found its dual dac 9018 implementation offered zero aavantages IMO.

On the other hand, I feel that light harmonic's implementation of the mobile 9018 far exceeds any dap I've heard. Idk what they did, but it made me a believer.

You know why?  One chip has 8 channels.  ;)  One is more than enough.

I dunno, so far I'm been disappointed with the mobile version.  You are talking about the geek 1000?  I don't know when they are going to release that.  I like to know if the mobile version is on par with the non-mobile. So far, non-mobile to me is suprieror sonically.  I've tried the LO of DX90 which contain the mobile version.

I think the non-mobile implementation probably makes the device bulky like the DX100 or the HM-901.  Personally, I would like to avoid iriver.

I have no issue with HM-901 form factor and I use it everyday even over the weekends.... Only thing i wish it has a big onboard storage...recently i am thinking about amping the HM-901 LoL

i love the dx100 sound but i was a bit put off by the fact that it took a long time to start up...

Same here, i try to avoid iriver but it is becoming harder when they are becoming Samsung

Fingers crossed for the coming cowon

Hi eke2k6,

Did you get a chance to listen to a Geek Wave prototype/pre-production model?  I'm hoping this is what you are referring to as I just ordered the XD128, and it would help to reassure my purchase.

Thanks.

Dave.

It either drained the battery flat within 5 hours or I had to wait 5 minutes after turning it on for it to load all my music. If they have fixed those problems, then I'd take it over the Sony if I wanted something that could handle full-size headphones well. When I owned it, I used to shock the staff in hi-fi stores by plugging it in as a DAC/pre into their power amps.

In the end, my unit bit me in the rear-end: I sold it to another member who was upset that there was a tiny amount of dust under the screen -- how it arrived from the factory. So I lost a lot having to refund the guy, then have it sent back to me, take it apart, remove the dust, then sell it again.

Lesson learned.

Awful design & craftsmanship (if any).

The mid-price market is huge and seems like they aimed for such rather than taking iRiver head on.

I am really grateful we still have HM-901 and Chord Hugo.

That's a huge brick (0.65kg combined mass)!

Yup, it's called the Cowon Plenue P1.

It's expected to cost around ~1K.

truth to the matter is that if I have to redo everything. I would be pretty content to live with just Fiio X5 and Chord Hugo.
