DAP-off: Astell&Kern AK240, HiFiMAN HM-901, Sony ZX-1, FiiO X5 + Chord Hugo & Calyx M from June. - Page 29

I'm super happy with the AK240......it has blown away any all in one, as well as any of the stacks I have tried. I have not tried the 901 in any form. The next opportunity I will and if its better to my ears......I would change.

What I do keep searching for is a new custom. I've never heard of the NT6 till Mim wrote about it. IF I do change I am going to go with a silicon shell so there is some movement. I think it will increase the chances of a better isolated fit. Right now I have been ogling (a audio tech word:) the new Westone ES60.

If I could put some more bass slam into the Miracles I think I would look no more. I've tried EQ the 240 and it did not help any of the ways I've tried.

How is your testing and comparison's going for the Calyx M ? All those interested in the M are a little starved of information atm although the most recent reports regarding SQ are good.

I was waiting for the firmware update that is supposed to be coming this month then I was going to focus on it fairly exclusively.

To me, Calyx M is a little too warm. The lack of digital output is also a disadvantage.

I know DX100(mine is Hibino R10) is not on the list, but I just received mines, and it's amazin.  Curra, it could be great addition to your comparison as it seems to be a top contender.  I prefer it over the DX90 and the X5.  The stage is wide, and it pushes the dynamics more.  It's not as tight sounding as the X5, but it sounds more natural as it's warmer.  Vocals are amazing and it makes my NT6 vocals sound close to TG334 vocals, very euphoric and textures stand out, but not sharp.  Even the TF10 sounds better than it does with other sources.  I think it's a sonic upgrade for TF10 owners.  Of course it scales up with higher end iems.

With my X5 / NT6pro pairing, I can feel the textures in addition to hearing them as if sitting on the subwoofer while finger squeaks across the frets give me shivers - even at low volumes. With my DX90, I can hear the same textures, but both the subwoofer and band are across the room so I cannot feel it the same way and I don't get shivers so I am less connected to the music.

Questions:
  1. Hearing what my X5 / NT6pro pairing can do makes me want even more - to be more intimately connected to the music. Is the balanced 901 a X5 musical texture monster on steroids where you can feel the music as described - but better - or is the X5 good enough for my goals?
  2. Can you feel the music with the AK240 as described, or does the balanced 901 make the AK240 feel thinner and distant like I hear the DX90?
  3. Also, if I got the SE5 and paired it with the balanced 901, would it be too much of a good thing vs. the NT6pro / 901 pairing? I noted in one of your previous posts that your preferred SE5 pairing was the ZX-1, or did I get that wrong?

As always I would really appreciate your insight.
To me the 901 is similar to the X5 but better, and very slightly darker and more organic. It works very well with SE5 as I do not find the SE5 warm unlike some people. But the AK240 pairing is also good with the SE5, better than AK240 - NT6 pairing.
The 901 makes the A240 feel a bit thin and cold.

Thanks Mimouille!

Last question (hopefully) - have you heard the Calyx M yet to compare to the balanced 901? The head-fiers descriptions I've seen so far are making the two sound similar in signature although I have not seen a direct comparison yet. I am still having trouble with the 901 form factor compared to the more elegant Calyx M. But if the Calyx M doesn't compare well, I may just have to plug my nose and buy myself a balanced 901.

I've heard that the ibasso dx100 can drive headphones like the hd650(300 ohm impedance) quite effortlessly and that the sound quality is one of the best, second only to the ak240.Is this true and should I buy these for my hd650,unamped?
Yes that is true. I have a hibino HDP r10. And it drives the senn hd800 well.

Good catch SilverEars, the Saber ES9018 are supposed to be much better than the Cirrus chips, of course the key to good sound is in the implementation of the DAC chips and supporting components.  Im hopeful that this will turn out righteous with the Light Harmonic Team led by Larry Ho(designer of the Da Vinci DAC) will pull some magic out of this pile of transistors and semi-conductors.  The geek Out has already received excellent reviews.

As an aside Larry Ho just asked funders on the comment page of their campaign if they would like WiFi and Airplay included.

So I've been playing around with several DAPs(X5, DX90, HDP R10, ODAC(with O2 or Vorzuge pure ii amp), and ipods(imod and 6th gen)), and the best to my ears turned out to be HDP R10.  The R10 has the non-mobile 8 channel ES9018.  The amp section on it is just amazingly well done.  I hear HM901 is dual version of the same chip.  I would like a LO function as I like to use the Vorz amp with the 901.  The reason why the 901 attracts me is that it's capable of working as a desktop usb/DAC.  So I'm guessing I have get the dock for the usb DAC functionality, and the iem card for my CIEM.

Anybody has compared the HDP R10 or the DX100 with the HM-901(with iem card of course)?  I'm curious what the differences are.  After all these comparisons, I feel that the non-mobile version of the ES9018 is the superior sonically.

The only reason I didn't keep the DX100 was the awful, battery-draining-when-doing-nothing-at-all firmware. It either drained the battery flat within 5 hours or I had to wait 5 minutes after turning it on for it to load all my music. If they have fixed those problems, then I'd take it over the Sony if I wanted something that could handle full-size headphones well. When I owned it, I used to shock the staff in hi-fi stores by plugging it in as a DAC/pre into their power amps.

In the end, my unit bit me in the rear-end: I sold it to another member who was upset that there was a tiny amount of dust under the screen -- how it arrived from the factory. So I lost a lot having to refund the guy, then have it sent back to me, take it apart, remove the dust, then sell it again.
