The AK has more speed and clarity but loses by a fair margin on this combo. Difference might be less strong on darker iems...the NT6 is brightish and pairs wonderfully with the 901...I am really hoping the mod will bring the AK closer.

Personally I really disliked the NT6 Pro / HM901 pairing.

What do you not like about the pairing?  What pairs well with your pro? Mimouille has the NT6, and probably a difference in what the pro outputs from it.

How does the 901 compare with the DX100(or the R10)?  After trying the 100, a bit of warmth adds to realism.  Possibly because the drivers are BA.  I hear 901 is warm and has the same chip as the 100.

That going to be one pricey DAP man.  I'm glad I'm not on a portable audiophile quest any more.  Congrats to you though.

Mim is gonna do a full blown mod on his AK240 and then feed it to a Hugo and analog out to the new Cavalli portable amp.

I mostly use the Hugo as USB DAC honestly. Stacks are too complicated for me. If I wanted to stack, I would not spend 2.5k$ on a DAP. But if the RWAK240 is not almost perfect, it will up for sale. To be honest though, the 901 is more natural and musical but the clarity of the AK240 is refreshing, without sounding a bit artificial like on the ZX1.

Im aiming to be just like that mim.. Stacks are too cumbersome to bring along hence im more interested in daps.. So the hugo is almost off my list.. Almost but not entirely.. Lol..

Do you prefer sound to be transparent and clear, slightly on the right side, or musical, analog, powerful and slightly warm...first is AK240, second is 901. So far 901 is still ahead to my ears.

I prefer the latter... I know this cos i love sounds coming from my tube amps.. Musical, anolog and powerful..

But

I also love the sound from my modded c4, detailed, transparent but strong in the bass department... Perfect!

Your description of the balanced 901 sounds perfect for my preferred sound signature, but my shallow side wants to like the prettier more ergonomic AK240 more.

With my X5 / NT6pro pairing, I can feel the textures in addition to hearing them as if sitting on the subwoofer while finger squeaks across the frets give me shivers - even at low volumes. With my DX90, I can hear the same textures, but both the subwoofer and band are across the room so I cannot feel it the same way and I don't get shivers so I am less connected to the music.

Questions:

  1. Hearing what my X5 / NT6pro pairing can do makes me want even more - to be more intimately connected to the music. Is the balanced 901 a X5 musical texture monster on steroids where you can feel the music as described - but better - or is the X5 good enough for my goals?
  2. Can you feel the music with the AK240 as described, or does the balanced 901 make the AK240 feel thinner and distant like I hear the DX90?
  3. Also, if I got the SE5 and paired it with the balanced 901, would it be too much of a good thing vs. the NT6pro / 901 pairing? I noted in one of your previous posts that your preferred SE5 pairing was the ZX-1, or did I get that wrong?

As always I would really appreciate your insight.

I'm super happy with the AK240......it has blown away any all in one, as well as any of the stacks I have tried. I have not tried the 901 in any form. The next opportunity I will and if its better to my ears......I would change.

What I do keep searching for is a new custom. I've never heard of the NT6 till Mim wrote about it. IF I do change I am going to go with a silicon shell so there is some movement. I think it will increase the chances of a better isolated fit. Right now I have been ogling (a audio tech word:) the new Westone ES60.

If I could put some more bass slam into the Miracles I think I would look no more. I've tried EQ the 240 and it did not help any of the ways I've tried.

How is your testing and comparison's going for the Calyx M ? All those interested in the M are a little starved of information atm although the most recent reports regarding SQ are good.

I was waiting for the firmware update that is supposed to be coming this month then I was going to focus on it fairly exclusively.

To me, Calyx M is a little too warm. The lack of digital output is also a disadvantage.
