You are right. I actually like Fitear C435 (brighter) with HM-901 more than Ref 1. I think the HM-901 realize the "potential" of these ciems... (well, unless I am crazy to plug them into any desktop component where the noise becomes unbearable due to high sensitivity).

I am sort of finding a complement with more "controlled/refined" signature...

How could he? You took it from him :-P!!

But in seriousness kkcc raises a good point that these days with DAPs especially something like the 901, amp module choice should be specified (lookin' @ U, CHG), & firmware versions stated.

I wouldn't call the (RW)AK240 bright or harsh but I'd call it colder compared to the HM-901. Either aren't fatiguing for long overhaul flights but that's cos I'd be using with my Fitears or K10's. With Ditas as much I love them for critique & analysis would be too hot for me with 3 hrs of straight listening on the HM-901/balanced/1.085 even.

Now, this firmware thing sort of bugs me a little..... especially for "high end" DAP... like going through the ordeal to read, audition, ask around to only to find out how it sounds, paying a sizable sum of hobby money to get it, religiously burning it in , finding the sweet vol but only to find out a few weeks later that the SQ will change because of some new firmware.....LoL

It is true that is strongly depends on the CIEM. With the SE5, which used to be neutral warm, but which, since I reshelled them, is neutral neutral, the RWAK240 sounds great. I am really hoping for a perfect synergy with the Roxannes.

You should, CHG! It's very nice with DSDs, especially on balanced cables... ;p

I've never found the treble with AK240 fatiguing in the least, even with my UERMs and Trevor's new cable, which adds a touch of brightness in itself. My ears get sore from the customs long before any chance of that. Could be my music selection as well, which is usually stuff that is fairly tame on long flights, eg: Sunday at the Village Vanguard.

Try explaining a box with red-and-white striped hazard-like IEM wire to airport security. ;)

I have not listened to the 901 in with any internal amp for comparison.

For me, I do not find the AK240 fatiguing at all. In a few hours I to have fly home from East Coast USA to Paradise. All told I'll do about 12 hours worth of listening. 4 probably with the 334s the other 8 with the Miracles.  When the plane lands, most of the time, I am sad it's time to put away the music and deplane.

Well maybe it is also dependant on the age, I am still in my prime while some of you more....mature folks may have a more....dampened receptiveness to trebble

(for those who did not take a hint with the use of the smiling emoticon, I am kidding of course).

More seriously, I did listen to a lot of rock recently...Arcade Fire's latest is very aggressive on RWAK240 + NT6, and much smoother with 901.

Just for the record, i just turned 25 last month and the ladies have been telling me I perform like an 17yr old in certain activites...
I auditioned AK240 many times and it doesnt sound bright... As for rock records, I heard Iron Maiden on @Decreate's AK240 before

Thanks for the encouragement. In fact, going balance on portable bugs me also... cos I know just like portable amp, eventually I would not be bothered to use it...

Will keep you updated on my progress

And yes, hope to see you in August..
