Which Hifiman: 601LE or 602?

I am about to pull the trigger for a new DAP replacing my J3. I wanted a very good sounding DAP that doesn't need a separate amp to sound terrific. Currently using my good old Yuin OK1 (150 ohm bud) as my ears cannot tolerate IEMs for extended listening sessions and daily commute where a bit of outside world sound is necessary. I don't mind the UI or aesthetics. Only on the basis of pure sound quality. Will I be better off buying the 601 limited edition? Based on Fang's website, the LE is the 601slim with the 602 amp. Max budget is $250 but I'm willing to go straight to 602 (posted at $399) if the difference between the two is like night and day. Decisions...decisions...Somebody here please help. Thanks.

If you are able to get to $399, maybe bump to $429 and consider DX90 - wait until next week when the masses receive their units - you can make an informed decision at that time - you may decide to go another direction - or maybe back into the arms of HiFiman - although I don't see a lot of people mention the 600 series DAPs a lot - That could also be me - just not noticing.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard from some reviews that the DX50 tend to be a bright DAP and kind of lack the dynamics. If the DX90 will have the same origin then I will have to pass on the ibasso. And $400+ is too much for me already. Can anyone who have experience with the hifiman speak and share their thoughts here.

I still have high hopes with the Hifiman but it seems people here are so much drawn to newer DAPs (X3,DX50/90,AK120/240,ZX1) except for the 901. That's my dream DAP but it's way, way out of my current budget and capacity. Anyone who has heard the 601LE and 602 and can provide comparison? Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the DX50 it's not bright to me, maybe sharper than the 601, but any modern DAP would be

The 901 is worth saving up for believe me, OR perhaps you should be looking for a used 801

I've had both 602 and 601LE, they sound quite similar. I think 601LE is basically a 602 in a 601 body.

I prefer 601LE for its slightly smaller size and longer battery life, and it's newer DAP too. For electronic stuff, I prefer to buy later versions than earlier ones in general.

802/901 are in different league over them that's for sure. I had X3 before, I think I prefer the sound of 601LE by a bit. Never had or tried the X5/Dx50/DX90, can't comment on those.

thanks KT66 and fengwei007. appreciate your inputs. btw, coming from a cowon J3, will either of the hifimans (601LE & 602) be a big leap from the cowon? I find that with the cowon, i always tinker with the equalizer to make it sound good or better. i love the ultra-portability and the battery life (64 hrs) but assuming the sound on the hifiman is so good, i can give those up and dwell on pure SQ. what i wanted to achieve together with my OK1 is excellent separation, better imaging and dynamics and out-of the-head soundstage. do you think i can achieve that with the combo? thanks again.

KT66, if I have the money, i would really invest on a 901 without thinking further. i have not heard any of the top tier DAPs but with all the reviews and testimonies here, I bet the 901 sounds crazily amazing! btw, I'm just daydreaming. :-)

Sorry I have never heard the Cowon, but if battery life is very important then also

consider the Hisound Studio - battery lasts me about 80 hours

no just purely SQ with my earbuds. :-) Will the Studio sound better than the Hifiman overall based on what I want to achieve? Thanks.

Studio beats 601 on their own

601 + good amp beats Studio

Studio sounds great without an amp

get both!

so then getting the LE version will make sense as it has the amp module of the 602 which i guess is much superior to the Studio one. am i correct to say that?

so has anyone got a chance to compare the 602 with the dx90?

I think comparing with DX50 would be fairer
