The Sansa Clip Zip has pretty good sound quality. It will sound just fine with the Hifiman RE400. The Hifiman RE400 does have a very flat frequency response so expect a neutral sound (not bass-heavy), see: http://en.goldenears.net/19626

You don't have to buy a new player.

Agreed. I have the Clip+, which apparently the Zip and Clip+ are the same in audio quality. It sounds good with pretty much any IEM I've used with it smily_headphones1.gif

If you really want to know all the technical details you can google for "Clip+ measured" and I'm sure you'll find some sites which discuss the sound quality of the Clip+. The Clip Zip uses similar hardware. Both the Clip+ and the Clip Zip sound excellent for a mp3 player in their price range.
