HD 598 Bass Distortion and Adding Headphone Amp

Hi, I'm the new guy. Several months ago, I upgraded my Sennheiser HD 515's to 598's. They sound great compared to the 515's. Recently, I've noticed pretty bad distortion mostly in the low end but also a bit on mid/high peaks. My main receiver is a Marantz 2252 without a headphone amp. I've compared with 3 different amps, the 515's and different formats. It's definitely in the 598's. Would a headphone amp help or could these be defective? Is the low inpedance a possible issue with certain receivers? What would be a good match in a headphone amp for $100-200? Thanks for looking!

Check the EQ/tone settings for whatever you're using to drive your cans: receiver, computer, mobile device, etc.

If the tone/bass or high/low frequencies are increased too high then you might experience distortion.

Older receivers like that were definitely designed for headphone output with higher impedance headphones in mind. So that could be the problem.

For $200? Grab a Schiit Magni. And if you are using a computer hooked to your stereo via onboard audio, grab a Schiit Modi DAC while you are at it. That should help improve the sound into your receiver and to the headphones.
