Please your suggestions for over-ears

Greetings all.

I have for some lengthy period of time allowed myself the luxury of being offhandedly dismissive of headphones of any persuasion priced above a mean $50. Recently I came across a set of Bose quiet comfort 3 NCs in my house and tested them in a coffee shop. Suffice it to say, not too shabby; I was nigh thoroughly pleased. But, after only 30 mins or so, my ears were sore and required respite... I've since been on the search for a set of over-ears and some way or another was led here to head-fi and you gracious erudite folks who I hope have not tired of guiding us tyros of audiophilia to the light...

I'd prefer over-ears, noise-isolating with minimal leakage (I assume that means closed-back). Budget...under 400 but preferably even lower, like 200-300. I would like to avoid buying an amp. I've read a bunch of posts and reviews on the Senn Momentums as well as V-Moda M-100s and a few others (Bose, B&W, Harmon Kardon, etc) but...so many headphones...so many varying opinions...and my local shops don't have a lot of testers...this way may be of greater benefit. I listen to all genres of music but I can say I'd be most disappointed if they didn't do classical justice. I hear active NCs are a bust too so am not partial to them.

Appreciate your help!!

Hello,

Welcome to head-Fi, sorry about your wallet!

Look into the PSB M4U2/1, AKG K550, Bang & Olufsen H6 if you wanted something neutral or Sennheiser Momentum for more fun and yet balanced sound.

Hope it helps

If you're looking for a little extra bass and noise cancelling there is the polk audio ultrafocus 8000, sony mdr1nc, and sony mdr10nc
If you're a basshead, you should check out the Velodyne vquiet and the Logitech ue 9000

NAD Viso HP50, Sennheiser Momentums and Focal Spirit One are the kings here IMO. The V-Moda M-100 are lacking in the mid-range and very bass-heavy. The first 3 are more well-rounded. Reviews for all four can be found on innerfidelity.com. Any of the 4 would be better than the Bose though!

So long as your head isn't small, K550 would be the first to look into (that's the reason I haven't tried it).  SRH840 works as an all rounder including classical, but the headband is on the heavy side though you can mod it. Both Momentum and the Focals have small earcups, especially Momentum, so they're less appealing.
