Sony MDR7506 vs. Audio-Technica ATH-M50 vs Shure SRH440 vs 840 vs Sennheiser HD 598

Thread Starter

Okay so I've grown weary of my Beats Studios I received for my birthday a couple years ago and am looking for a pair of seriously kick-ass headphones. I've been looking around the internet for over ears (the only kind I will ever where) and these are the 5 headphones I've narrowed it down to. My main question: which of these 5 have the best sound quality?

I'M OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS. JUST KNOW THAT MY BUDGET IS $200.

The HD 598 is the winner, unless you like a colored sound signature.  They are also the only open cans (they leak sound and isolate poorly but have larger/better sound stage) on your list.

They all have strengths but deciding which is best for you right now depends on what music you listen to, what sort of sound you prefer, and whether you need isolation. So we'd need that information.

I am also interested in this topic and looking for something like your suggestions, I was also looking some Grado headphones, probably the 125 or the 200's, what do you think about those?

Also, do you know if there is a difference between the HD598 and the HD558 ? It seems the HD´s are very comfortable and with good reviews, unfortunately I dont like the white/wood look.

Thanks

Probably best to start your own thread. Your needs already seems like they might be different from the OPs, and it will be easier for both of you to get help if you don't try to mix the two here smily_headphones1.gif

haha you are right, sorry about that.

I can only comment on the MDR 7506 and the HD598.  Of the two, the HD598 is the better for listening to music, its balanced and neutral if ever so slightly on the warm side.  The MDR 7506 is designed as a studio monitor and has some exaggerated peaks.

You may also consider the HD558 which many find identical to the HD598, and use the money you save and an amp or DAC.
