Does my receiver have a DAC?

Thread Starter

It's a Pioneer VSX-9700s. My dad brought it in 1989, did DAC's exist back then? Just wondering if its my TV doing the conversion or the receiver.

Also since it only has analog inputs/outputs, is the surround sound virtual? Like Dolby virtual surround? I have 2 front stereo speakers and 2 rear surround speakers with virtual center.

A DAC is a digital to analog convertor. If the receiver doesn't have an optical or coaxial digital input, then it does not have a DAC.

Even if it does have a DAC, it may not be a good one. DACs have improved a whole heck of a lot since then smily_headphones1.gif
