I don't know what you mean by "properly", but if you're referring to higher fidelity when listening to loss-less formats (FLAC, ALAC, etc.) compared to lossy formats (MP3, AAC, etc.):
What you need first is the files, obviously.
Then you need a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), an amplifier (headphone or otherwise), speakers (or headphones), and your ears
When using a computer, to get the most out of listening to loss-less music you generally have two options:
A dedicated internal sound card with an integrated DAC and front-out (and/or amplified headphone) port with a set of powered speakers or a pair of headphones.
An external DAC and amplifier (headphone or otherwise) with powered speakers or a pair of headphones.
