In need of clarifications about virtual surround , also looking for an equivalent to my HD598, but closed. Thank you!

So, i have done my share of google search but i still have some questions about surround sound.

-From what i understand, to get virtual surround, i need to get a 5.1 or 7.1 signal to my sound card. And to do that, the game must support such an output, and windows needs to be set on either 5.1 or 7.1 for it to work. so here are my questions.

- If my sound card (i have a sound blaster z) doesn't support 7.1 output, does it mean that it can't create virtual surround from a 7.1 signal ? only from a 5.1 one?

- is 7.1 virtual surround superior to 5.1 ? I know more games are limited to 7.1 than to 5.1

Also, i wanted to know if you could recommend a pair of headphone similar in term of comfit (large ears ) to my HD598, but closed.(my girlfriend has trouble studying when i game of listen to music in the same room)

Thank you !

On surround sound, I was under the impression that many games (PC games) had headphone settings, and using what is built in will handle surround effects for you.

Then again, I am not an expert on this subject. This is just what I have seen when people ask about "surround sound headphones" from a tech forum.

On headphone recommendations, I use Audio Technica ATH-M50. I have not been able to compare to a pair of 598's, but they sound really good, and I have fairly large ears myself.

I have heard the same about surround sound, but only for some games . On the contrary, if you want positional audio in battlefield 3 or 4, the best way to achieve it is to use virtual surround.

ATH-M50 looks great, but can people hear what you are listening to like on the hd598? Which is open.

I think that any decent sound card should be able to handle the virtual surround sounds...

At any rate, I recommend posing such a question here, either in "System Builders Anonymous" or "Echo Vale." I know I've seen posts on dealing with surround sound in Battlefield games specifically. I bet someone has experience setting it up properly.

They are sealed, so they will be much better at isolating you than your 598's.
