Basic Equipment Needed?

Hi All,

First post here, want to get my portable setup as good as my HiFi (Rotel, Quad) I currently have a 6G iPod Nano and a set of Shure SE215. I want to pick up a 160GB Classic, just headphones and an amp (is it necessary?), are overheads or in ears better? I have no budget really but obviously don't want to be spending silly money!

Thanks

Jake

Are you fixed on an iPod or would you consider an alternative DAP that wouldn't need amping?

Well I'm a bit of an Apple fanatic so it would make sense haha! But I'm open to suggestions, why does an iPod need amping? Thanks

You'll get a better sound quality with amping, but I only mentioned it as it was a query on your list. If you like Apple, you may well find the UI of the higher quality DAPs frustrating.

Amping probably wouldn't be an issue with IEMs but may well help if you go for headphones.

I've not used iPods for some time so there are probably others better placed to advise around that. You will certainly be able to improve on Shure  SE215, see here...
