''Online In Store Experience''

What do you guys think about a website offering online recordings of headphones. (I won't name the website here)

They use it for online comparison and state: ''In the spirit of providing opportunities for the -store name- community to “hear” products online in the closest approximation to actually “being here” as possible, we have established recording processes that provide an experience very similar to what we hear first-hand in our listening and recording environments.''

Personally I think its impossible, for a headphone to be transmitted trough a microphone and than through your own headphones, too many variables I think.

If anything I think its misleading? What do you guys think?

So they basically EQ a song to hell until it appears to match the sound signature a headphone has? I supposed if you had perfectly neutral sound system you could.... No I'd consider it a gimmick/wouldn't let it influence what you choose to buy.  They can't emulate a headphones soundstage, dynamics or the way it seals on your head/comfort those are all things that effect sound imo.

Actually I think they put a microphone in between the headphones and than record it.

I still don't think that this is anything to be very impressed with. I can't say that I could trust something like that. I'm a big fan of soundstage, and as said above, that can't be simulated through a microphone.

So to answer the question, I do believe that it's impossible, and also believe that in some sense it is misleading.

But in another way, the site may be just trying to provide a service to it's customers who can't audition headphones before they purchase them, and most people would like to do that. Some of us are happy by going of what people say based on their experiences, but not everyone is satisfied with that method of gathering information.

Yea, but I just don't think that listening to a recorded audio file of a headphone, through your own maybe crappy hp's, is a good way to judge a headphone.

Imagine listening to a closed headphone recording, through an open headphone, you just can't imho.

If you're talking about the Golden Ears app, that, if you're using one of a certain number of headphones, will change the FR to match that of other headphones, then it is interesting. However, as other people have already said, it can't match all the characteristics of other headphones.
