For some reason I cannot even remember the names of modern funk/soul bands. I just do not have the same problem with what I consider the golden era of instrumental music - late 60s - early 70s. Back then different labels had different sounds, but almost everyone of them were so nice to my ears, except the record quality associated with that period. Chess, Blue Note, Stax, Rhino...
Curtis Mayfield, Betty Wright, Barbara Lynn, Lyn Colins, Grant Green, Phil Upchurch, Bloodstone, Donny Hathaway and many others.
I don't know what modern engineers are chasing, but the drum and bass sound very rough and sharp. Yes, it might sound natural but not musical at all. Old tracks sound much softer with nicer flow. Also, I notice that many funk band overuse brass which was rare back then.
I understand that there might be not that many talents on this scene today, and I do not expect the same level of performance. But, do you know any artist which is attempting to recreate the music of that era? I just want to hear the same old juice in a new package.
