If now I plug my headphones into my headphones out on my PC that means my sound card is doing the DAC. Now ... if I plug Shiit Modi to my PC sound card ... does that mean that now Modi DAC is doing the converting>?>? and then the Vali amp is amping it up?

Hi, this is not how it works. Once you connct the Modi via USB (!!!) to your PC, the Modi is your "soundcard". The other soundcard in your PC won't do anything. And that is a very good thing usually. The modi is a DAC, an digital to analogue converter who converts your flac, mp3, aac wav, whatever digital files into analogue sound that is fed via rca cable to the Vali who then amplifies the signal into your headphones...

PC -> Modi -> Vali -> Headphones

Cheers,
K

the probably thought you were connecting a magni directly to your sound card in which case you need a 1/8 inch to Dual RCA.
With the M/M stack and I am assuming the same goes for the Vali, you need a USB  A to B cable to connect you modi to the PC and then a Dual Male RCA to Dual Male RCA cable to connect the Modi to the amp.

One thing to note if you go for the Magni, not sure if this is just an isolated problem with my HD598 cable.  But when using the stock cable I get noise in the right ear and distortion.  With a cable I bought off eBay I don't have this issue.  Probably something to do with the 598s stock cable using TRRS 2.5mm

Nah, I went with Modi / Vali combo. We'll see what happens. Coming in tomorrow :-)
