From what I recall of the SE846, it was way down on soundstage size, with a much more constrained feeling (read 'intimate'). And yes, the bass was not nearly as extended, textured, and communicative as that of the Ref.1. It was more one note, and generic, although did extend quite deep for a BA setup. Treble was another issue... it was only remotely well extended if one uses the white treble filter. Midrange was more up front and in your face, with the Ref.1 bordering on a slight 'U' signature there, but the tone of the Ref.1 seems much better (vocals especially).

I think if I had the SE846 on hand, the Ref.1 would handily render it sub par by comparison.

Well of course the 846 is sub par and also sub in price. Comparing a $900 to a $1600 says a lot about the $900 product. I believe both are good earphones and both are directed at different users. I would compare a BA Driver with another BA Driver and compare a Hybrid to another Hybrid or Dynamic driver.

It does not matter to me one iota if both comparing earphones are BA, Hybrid, or vice-versa.  All I wanted to know is how both the SE846 and Ref 1 compared based on how they sounded, not at all based on the different price points between the two, the amount of drivers differently both models embody and/or the different driver specifications.

At listening level volume should be fine.

Would using different songs left over night be better? As one song to the other will have different frequencies? Or have I got the break in process a little wrong biggrin.gif

My Ref1 has been left burning in in the Meridian Prime for over 48 hours so tonite i should hear a better controlled bass.
When i received it i compared it to SE846, Merlin and JVC FX 850 plus some other smalller scale iem's, i also will have TPeos Altone200 on monday.
The Ref1 is the first universal that competes with my Merlin, was very glad it is not a mid based iem, bass is best of them all,no contest.Only area that could have been improved was soundstage which im sure it'll get biger soon too.
The 846 i thought competes really well, it was more open and natural, bass is not as much but i wouldn't wish for more necessarily, prefer Ref1 no doubt but 846 is great too. its the BA to dynamic difference,a well tuned dynamic will beat a ba one any day when it comes to bass, its that deep sweet extension hitting in a natural, speaker like way. I expect the Ref1 to get much better after burn in,so will keep u updated.
My first impressions are that only if you are a nutter like we all are here you would care and of course ref1 is amazing, but i could live with FX850 just as well and experience great audio.
SE846 is a great iem:)
My Audio Technica IM70 is beyond believe good value:))
But no doubt Ref1 is the best universal in existence, it is more special than SE846 in all kinds if ways and so it should be,thats its selling point:)
Great job Gavin and thank you for ultra speedy delivery👍👍👍

A symphony might have the best mix and you may consider using it for your break in

How long did you wait for delivery?

Here's a burn in track for you guys if you intend burning in overnight. I would recommend a volume just slightly higher than normal listening.

I will leave it up for a day................................

Cool, that makes sense, don't want to pound them in with trance or dub step out of the box, sounds like a grand and elegant way of breaking the ref 1 in when they arrive. Thanks!

Awesome, thanks for that mate, I have an app on my iPhone which generates pink noise, white noise etc but not all the same time, this'll come in handy after some orchestral break in!

Of course....

Scenario: Install track on DAP...set on repeat....hook-up headset to be run-in....place under pillow for the night...or on your head like this...:L3000:

Why is this better than say a normal track?

What are its special properties?
