calculating maximum headphone volume

Thread Starter

I would like to calculate the maximum volume of a pair of headphones I am considering purchasing.  They have a sensitivity of 110db SPL/mW and a nominal impedance of 18 ohms.  If I have a headphone amp that outputs a voltage of 9 volts, how loud could the headphones get?  I have looked at a bunch of different websites explaining how to do this, but they are very confusing me.

Try Apex's site here:

The easiest way is to download the Excel file and play around with the values.
