How to make the most of my HD650?

Hi Guys

Im new to the proper audio scene.

I have been using a Sennheiser PXC450 and HD555 and have recently purchased the HD650s

I have an Integra DTR 80.1 and was planning on just plugging it into the headphone jack (Noob I know)

I will eventually learn the importance of a good source but at the moment I use my laptop as my source and projector as output.

I connect the laptop to my amp via HDMI cable.

I do 50% Movies (downloaded) and 50% Music (music is played from HypeMachine mainly)

If I was to be more leaning to music I would just get a decent USB DAC but I do a lot of movie watching.

How can I get the most of my HD650?

My only thought was to bypass the Integra amp, connect the projector directly to the laptop and use a DAC for movies

and just use the USB DAC for my music.

Also suggestion on which DAC to go for under $200 NZD (170 USD)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Sammy

So youre using the laptop hdmi out and feeding that to the 80.1 receiver?

Id try and get a usb amp/dac combo and pull the audio bitstream from the laptop... And use that for movies and music. Power the hd650 with that.

Some ht receivers have surprisingly good headphone outs though. And i honestly dont find my 650 to be all that finicky about what i amp it with. As long as the amp has the voltage swing to power the 300 ohm drivers... Thats good enough for me personally.

Hi Kramer

Yup the laptop HDMI is feeding the 80.1

The problem I have is, if I feed the 80.1 via HDMI which is in turn connected to the projector, will i get audio out through the USB or will it just pass through the HDMI to the 80.1?

I would prefer not to connect the projector directly to the laptop as the 80.1 up scales my ****ty quality movies.

I was thinking of the Arcam rPac. I can get it for NZD 250.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
