Good sound can't be described based on measurements in my opinion. But transparent and neutral sound can in my belief. Several waves at once (as music) can be partially measured through IMD (inter modulation distortion) by playing several tones at once.

Music, that you play, is one single wave, regardless of the number of instruments used. It all singles out into one wave. There is no such thing as "playing more than one wave at once".

Yeah, of course. Please don't get hung in the details. Writing off my phone and such. Point is, IMD is rarely a problem from what I hear. Not that I know.

On an on-topic note, I just created the UGLIEST Frankenstein's Monster Hybrid Pads.  I took the foam doughnut left over from making jerg pads (guess that's from the HE-500 velours...? whichever one is left over), sliced it to create an angle, sewed some microsuede to the inner ring, folded it over and underneath, secured it with my all time favorite (3M carpet tape), affixed an extra thick Creatology ring to the underside with... you guessed it, carpet tape, and finally more carpet tape to affix the pad to the mounting ring (salvaged from my mismatched Focus pads that came with my HE-560s).  For the final touch, I used a strip of the thin Creatology adhesive felt to the inside, which helps with any peakiness.

As has been posited, the density of the foam used really makes a difference.  I was surprised at first, having worn the denser Q701-based pads all day, and it took a minute to adjust and realize why the new ones sounded so different.  Then the light bulb went on, and I sat back to enjoy the sound of napalm in the morning.  It sounds like... victory darthsmile.gif

Did I mention these are ugly?  LMAO ugly.  But the sound!  Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh.  Like the FocusPads, but my ears are so happy swimming in the extra space.  Compared to the other pads I hacked together using the foam from the Q701 pads, Frankenstein's Monsters are less dark, still provide killer bass, and have a better detail, soundstage and imaging.  It was DIY hell today, but I landed in the Promised Land.

And they are so ugly, they scared that blue circle in the sky all the way back to the Nether Reaches... errrrr, Netherlands wink.gif
Lolz..making jokes about my country huh? Be careful..before u know it one of those heavy blue circles fall exactly on top of (as u called it urself) ur pile of s..t..hehehehe very_evil_smiley.gif

Trust me, if that happens, we're going to have an intergalactic war (OK, it'd probably be intragalactic, but some alien butt will be kicked).

Yep, I'm (still) subscribed to your thread.

I'm pretty sure I've said any number of times that I'm definitely buying a Blue Circle amp, but then the MiBs zap me, and that's that.

I'm sure as you know that the OP meant that rather than thinking about music as a collection of single waves that represent each individual frequency as completely independent of all others we need to consider that the final interpreted/reproduced wave is really a representation of all of the frequencies interacting and influencing one another.

Hi everyone, I have a question that I hope can get answered today.  I also posted this in the 400i thread because I am not sure yet if I will eventually get a 400i or 560, so I apologize in advance if you are reading this twice :)

Long story short, I purchased an Asgard 2 this past Tuesday with 1 day shipping but basically it was cancelled by AMZ last night due to lack of stock.  So now it is Friday night and my wife and I are moving to China this coming Tuesday!  I am trying to find a good amp that will transport well during the long journey, and that I can purchase with overnight shipping so I can get it on Monday before I leave Colorado for good.  I will be using this amp with 400i or 560 that I will eventually purchase in China.

I'm mostly looking at Amazon because any amp with Prime shipping option can get 1 day shipping for $5, whereas most other websites will charge me nearly $50 for overnight shipping.  My budget is around $500, but I'm willing to go a bit over if it's a really good amp... I am actually eyeing the Burson Soloist SL on AMZ for $599.

I'd love to hear anyone's recommendations, whether it is opinions on the Soloist SL or some other amp.  It also needs to be easily transportable, so open designs like Project Polaris is probably out, as is tube amps (I think... I've never had one but they seem fragile to transport).

Thank you so much!

Check the supported voltage for the amp that you are going to buy! Soloist sl is great and it's dual voltage.

Yes!  That is a huge plus.  I noticed that you could switch the voltage input, but I wasn't sure if that would necessitate a separate power adapter as well.  Does the included power adapter rate at 110-230V?

There is no separate power adapter. The voltage switch is on the amp itself.

Anyways this is going offtopic. Let's come back to the 560 dscussion

Sorry, I just mean the power cable that you connect to the Soloist SL.  I guess it doesn't matter what type of cable I use since the voltage switch is on the amp?

That is one more reason I am preferring the Soloist SL to any Schiit amp, since I'd need to purchase a separate 220-240V power adapter for those amps.

Also, will the HE-400i/HE-560 sound fine with Soloist SL and entry-level DAC?  I currently just use the Soundblaster Omni as my DAC (it is the USB version of Soundblaster Z).  I know it's not perfect, but I'm not sure if I have the budget for a nice DAC like Uberfrost or even Conductor SL at this point.

Thanks!
