Would one have to periodically maintain the leather and wood on the HE-560? I have never had equipment of this nature and I'm not too sure if it's necessary.

Wood can be basically left alone, clean with a soft cloth, no moisture ever. Not sure about leather, but if you wear them for long periods of time a nice wipe with a lightly damp cloth with a little vinegar should help remove any oil build up. Others might have different thoughts.

I am such a chicken, I typically change nothing and go stock all the way. What does removing the outer grill seem to help with?

Opens up the soundstage a bit and subtle details are easier to detect in the recording. It alleviates a little acoustic compression caused by the fabric and metal grill.

Thanks for the clarification. Is removing the outer grill as simple as it sounds and easily reversible?

For the latest version of HE560s, it's the exact same mechanism as all previous Hifimans, so very easy and fully reversible (the retainment is by a plastic ring with tabs that wedge into slots).

Wow, that's the most succinct I've read of explaining the purpose of this, bravo.

Sweet, sounds like a must try. I will listen stock for a few weeks first mind you. According to RazorDog the stock should arrive next Tuesday so I might have my 560 very soon.

As with most things, expect a subtle difference though... I'll go stock first and only if a reason is found to make such mods, I'd make them then smily_headphones1.gif

According to RazorDog my 560 just shipped so I might have them early next week! I haven't been looking forward to a headphone like this since I was waiting for my D7000 (which took two weeks from Florida to get here, how sucky was that?)

This must mean mine is coming soon! I'm feelin the same excitement! Good thing the holiday weekend will keep me distracted so I won't be thinking about these too much.

Try using this instead of the foam.

It is anax 2.0 with both foam and rug liner, though max used less foam than is used with my pair wink.gif

Should you guys go to the hd800 modding thread? Or we talking he560 still?

Speaking of he560, if more treble is what you seek, I suggest giving the old HF velour a try. In the case of leather and orthos, the treble always takes a hit. I suspect less with the new pads having perforation and a velour top but I'm willing to bed a significant amount of treble still gets subdued. Try it, $10 test! Some of which already have the velours ready and can make the 2 min swap.
