Please don't turn the clean and tight bass of the Hifiman to something similar to Audeze! I didn't like the constant rumble much. I rather bookshelf/monitor like bass presentation...

I haven't reattached the baffle, so if you see any point in adding more felt, I can try, but it'll take a good argument ;)

Hey any way you can take a pic of the other side of your Q701 pads? I was looking at mine the other day and didn't know if I had to tear into it ot fit the Hifiman mount ring on it. (I'll edit this post if it needs to stay on topic, but for now..)

OK, your post and baffle diagram won't quote, but here are some pix of the pad side of the HE-500 baffle.  I don't detect any tapering on either ring.  They're just different diameters stacked on top of each other, with the stanchions creating the gap for the mounting ring tabs.

Sure thing.  One thing I've noticed while removing them is that the carpet tape I used to secure pad to mounting ring is separating a bit.  I was pretty conservative in how much I used, so I need to reapply with more to make it more secure.

NO tearing needed.  I just applied carpet tape (the white you can see through the holes in the mounting ring) to the Q701 pad, lined up the ring such that I could do the back vent mod (the four foam strips are basically centered on the high/back part of the pad), then pressed firmly.

Thanks for all the detailed info Jerg. Sounds like the 400i is going to be more to my liking. Hope they address the driver screws issue before they release it.

I need a set of those pads for my 500, any word on when we can buy those?

I received a pair of the 560's today in the bush of Alaska. Running them straight out of the DX90. Will also try the 901, balanced and SE and other amps.

I'm inclined to agree with him. This went from the HE560 impressions, to the HE560 modding thread in a hurry. I know if I were getting one, it'd be for what it is, not what someone else's version would be. People far and wide will look for impressions of the 560, and get impressions of a 560 ultra mod, must do diy version.

I'm fairly certain Hifiman wants to hear people discussing how their brand new baby is doing.

Well this is just addressing the issues with the headphone as well...and possible ways to fix those issues that people might be considering to be a deal breaker.

Not to argue but you could also say these are tweaks. There are many people out there that are content with the HE500 in it's stock form and feel like they've gotten quite a bargain in terms of SQ to price. Tweaking of course has their rewards as well and is more of customizing a sound.

I do agree that the modding portion of this thread needs to be moved by Jerg to a 'mod thread' but that seems a little 'ahead' considering these haven't been released yet.

Jerg is the only one doing modifications right now, but he's not the only one with a pair of HE560s. Why don't you guys just be patient and wait for others' further impressions/reviews/feedback. They've only listened to their toys no longer than 2 days. Chill.

+1

The sooner jerg discovers these the more chance there is for a better finished product.

To be fair, he can easily revert back to its stock form.

Now doing permanent mods would be a bit unfortunate, as he is the only guy who's post some rather detailed impressions.

Now that the oversight has been find, we can hopefully focus on the stock one [however, if Dr. Fang promises to fix it, we might as well continue reviewing the slightly modded 560, but I doubt it. For all we know, it's slight, might possibly even be intentional.]

So far the impressions are overwhelmingly positive then, which is good :]

As long as this remains the most serious [unresolved?] oversight, we should be fine :P

There are no perfect headphones out there.  For those who have to mod them for personal tastes in sound, fine, but does that make them better for every one else?

B-but sir, who doesn't like more sub-bass extension? :p

At any rate I'll more or less shut up now, I've had my schpeel. Seems like quite a few others have received these so they should take the limelight and share impressions in their own ways.
