Does anyone that has both the HE560 and HE500 know if the actual diaphragm size/magnet array of the 560 is larger in surface area to the HE500 or are they the same? Thanks for this answer if there is one, it'll help me on my decision whether or not to pick up an older model HE500 or HE560.

They are identical in tracing/array size, just that HE560's driver is single-ended and the diaphragm is thinner, as opposed to HE500's dual-ended magnets and thicker diaphragm membrane.

Thanks for the reply. So I assume in terms of technical characteristics the amount of total air movement that the 560 can output in terms of quantity until distortion should be pretty much identical to the 500 then since the drivers have the same surface area. I'm mainly asking because I'm looking for an upgrade into the realm of high end headphones, but want to know how hard I can EQ these on the off chance I want to listen to hip hop for fun instead of critical listening.

How do these compare with the HD700?

I vastly preferred the HE-500 to the HD700, which bested it in all but the bass and comfort department. The HD700 can sound rather odd in the upper mids and quite bright compared to the HE-500. The Hifiman was also more open sounding. I definitely think the difference with the HE-560 would be more pronounced with the HE-560 sounding more neutral and natural e.g. no spikes, whilst addressing the comfort factor and not having such heavy amplification demands as the HE-500. Definitely think the HE-560 would be the way to go as it really addresses the annoyances anyone might have had of Hifiman's previous efforts.

the build quality is pretty impressive, but their sound... i just don't feel that they are worth the money. to me the sound signature was quite warm and the headphones themselves reminded me of the bower and wilkins p7 alot.. LOL.

anyways, me calling them garbage definitely stirs up some trouble :D

Hey now. The Oppo is quite enjoyable and the build quality exceeds both pairs of HE-560s I have received.  Agreed on the HE-6 outperforming 560.

The 560s can do better with a little more amplification.

hifiman really needs to get their build quality up... and maybe make a piano black pair of HE-560.

That's not the kind of comment I typically see you make. You must have some pretty strong feelings on the matter.

Thanks. I was originally planning to go with the he500 but then learned about the new 560s. I can't audition either of them but the hd700 I can audition for hrs. Price also plays a factor.

I didn't like hd700 either, though it sounded fairly spacious.

the 700 is a piece of crap. It's not even in the same conversation as the 560 or the 500. That may seem harsh, but truth often is. I've spent a lot of time with the 700 trying to appreciate what it can do. But, the technology that went into making it just doesn't work with the 700 as with the 800. IMHO.

I see you're from Chicago...  The Chicago Head-Fi meet was a week ago :p  The 560's were available to audition there :/  Some people brought 500's with them too.  Oppo models were there too...
