Of course the HE-500 pads have been used and the HE-560 pads are brand new, so must be that. You can really feel the difference but anyway, the problem is solved. (now just improve the stitching lol)

Thanks Hifiman!!

:beerchug:

Pics would actually be good, I'd like to see. Perhaps a little QC woopsie with the pads?

Anyways, those out there who might have problems with the earpads being too small, could you perhaps measure your ears? ;)

Then, we have something to compare to at least.

As I understand it the 'beta testers' will receive one hard pad set and one bigger but soft pad set?

Hifiman could just ship the 560 with smaller pads and give us the option to buy the new pads when finished (perhaps with a discount for the first month or so). Then there'd be a lot of response from different folks around and all would likely be happy. Don't know..

Personally, I wouldn't want to order from China as I am in EU (taxes and stuff).

Kudos to Hifiman for doing this.

If the new earpads are softer then I don't really see it being an issue.  With the older velours I really wouldn't want them to touch any part of my ear as they are quite firm. I wouldn't complain too much, I worn Grado L-cush pads for a year or two and anything is more comfortable than those.

Kudos to Hifiman for the quick response and update, though I wouldn't hold back preorders because of this. I'd rather have customers follow up with Hifiman to get larger pads if the shipping ones aren't comfortable.

Can you make this as a option for ordering in the later stage if one feels like using larger pads.?

I assume that he400i will benefit from the pad change. Sometimes it's good to go second.

for those of you concerned about pre-orders and small ear pads, I received this email today -

Dear customer,

This is customer service from HIFIMAN. Thank you for your pre-order of HE-560.

We get feedback that some of our customers feel the ear pads are too small for their ears. Please let me know if you experience this issue, we will ship a pair of new ear pads free of charge in about two to three weeks.

Let me know if you have any questions or I can be of any assistance.

I don't think waiting a couple of weeks for larger ones is too much to ask.

However, for those that need the larger pads, it would be nice if they relax the 30 day return policy so that the owner can test out the cans with the proper pads for a couple of weeks.

Mine are at the DHL facility in Seattle this morning, so I'll find out soon if the pads work for me or not.

The new pads are extremely soft (like Audeze LCD3 lambskin pads level of soft), I can imagine most people are acting up because they think it'd feel like the old velour pads (in terms of the velour / foam materials) but with a smaller opening, which is of course false.

Probably blown out of proportion, considering not many people even have these...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen one person who owns these complain about the pads. Someone measured, and the shenanigans started. Probably a waste of HFM resources for something that may not even be an issue.

If it continues like this, I expect people to bitch about every little thing, and HFM having to cater to EVERYONE meaning potential revision after revision.

I would have liked to see an oval opening still.  When it comes down to it, our ears are oval and not circle.  You can have the same square centimeterage of opening, and have the oval feel more spacious than the circle.  The compression over time issue wouldn't bas as much of a problem if the pads used memory foam instead, but that requires an entirely different session of r&d because of its different acoustical properties.

Hopefully it doesn't continue past this earpad episode then.

At least having these mild delays before the full-fledged release will cut down on the possibility of future revisions, even if it seems inefficient. People want a product that's perfect for them, and know that Fang / Hifiman do listen, so it's no wonder everyone is speaking up, or "bitching" as you call it.

I dont think its bitching around or a matter of acclimatization. If your ears get touched it can get annoying. No matter how soft the material is. It takes you away from the experience. Nevertheless you should give Hifiman credit for there fast plausible response and reaction.

With regard to oval vs circular, the problem with smaller openings for me is not that the top or bottom of my ear touch the pads, but that the sides of ears do. So an oval shape would just make the issue worse since the problem for me is the width not the height of the opening.

I already felt that with the smaller-opening earpads, the HE560s are already on par with HD800 in terms of fit and overall comfort. Maybe the bigger earpads will actually push it past HD800 in comfort levels, who knows.
