What amps have you tried with the HE560?  I am considering the Emo Mini, Schiit Mjolnir, and Audio-GD NFB-6.

If the HE560 is slightly dark, the Mjolnir might be a good match.  What do you think?

Not quite, it's not slightly dark, some might even feel it is slightly bright. That is treble behaviour, I'm talking midrange behaviour.

HE560s would work best with neutral ~ warmish-neutral upstream, I think.

The HE56-0 sounds great with the tube WA5 and also the solid state GSX Mk2 on hand.  Both warmer with tonality. i will try them on the Heed and the Meier amps soon. Sound good on rhe AK240 as well

Sorry I misunderstood you.  Many people reviewed the HE500 (I never heard them).  Some of those people said that the HE500 was slightly dark, not bright, etc.  So I thought that might have been what you meant when you said that the HE560 sounded similar to the HE500 but less extreme.

"Neutral--warmish neutral" upstream sounds like the Emo mini-X might work well.

Bright is not necessarily an insult -> Hifiman, SR-009, HD-800 ... :D

I find the 560 not bright but not forgiving of bright recordings or ones that are poorly recorded. I think you get your money's worth and some with the 560.

Treble and bass are still much, much clearer and less muffled on the HE560s, but the midrange balance feels rather close, just that HE560s don't have the bloom/glare around 500-1500 Hz that HE500s have, nor do HE560s have the dip in energy around 2kHz suffered by HE500.

In the recent past I would have considered HE560s to feel less grounded in balance compared to HE500, not so anymore. It is just as grounded, just instead of having a meaty, weighted lower end, it has a powerful, explosive lower end.

Another point I may have considered saying in the recent past would have been that HE560s are not as smooth as HE500, especially for vocal music. I now realize that HE500's rendition of vocals is smooth, but not THAT smooth, instead it is partly masked by the muted 2kHz region. HE560s are as smooth-sounding with that consideration. Treble-wise HE560s are brighter but less peaky, so some will probably say its treble is smoother than HE500's, while others will say the exact opposite.

Just some musings...
Wow those are some excellent descriptions!

Thank you and
So forgive this naive question but is this the same connector on all hifiman cans?

OMG that's great news I want to read this!

Can anyone compare there 560 to an hd800?
I don't care that they are prototypes,
I just like a "ballpark" idea how they stand up or compare to them,
Since the PM1 thread done so, unfairly I believe.

Many people say that the Emo is slightly warm and the high end is slightly rolled off.  Not everyone says this.  Many who do not report a high end roll off nevertheless report that the amp is slightly warm.  I never heard the amp.

Really?  I don't find it bright at all

Random update: the customer service rep from Head-Direct (Cao Wei) informed me that the HE-560 is almost ready and that they will ship before May 1. Hurray!

The Emotiva is not bright, but it can be a bit edgy sounding in the treble (also source dependent) and it certainly does nothing to hide the 10KHz peak in HE-500s. The HE-500 has some uneven frequency response in the lower treble, so it would be nice if the HE-560 fixes this, but it will give the impression that is slightly brighter compared to the HE-500. Personally with the improved efficiency of the HE-560s I wouldn't bother with a speaker amp. Might actually regret selling my Project Sunrise 2 amp...

Sigh ! I had sold all my HFM cans since I was going the route of Stax and HD 800. Jerg's review has me seriously reconsidering things.
