I guess I wasn't listening to the right tracks before, but man the treble is so fast, it has a ton of texture.

The wood grains are lighter than the first unit...not sure which I prefer aesthetically. This one is more LCD3-ish, the previous one more LCD2-ish.

The lighter looks better IMO. more contrast.

I definitely would go for a lighter color but that's just me. The wood is a nice touch because not two headphones will look the same.

One can appreciate how quickly they solved the baffle issue as well. Could've just saved a ton of new buyers from a revision right there! Good job @jerg

Well I don't think Hifiman will offer wood darkness choices when HE560s start selling so, the wood will be like a box of chocolates. Hard to imagine that teak wood varies so much.

Thats good to know ahead of time.

I can see a lot of swapping happening based on the color of the cups.  The Classifieds will need a new forum just for that.

I do like the fact that no two will look exactly alike.

I think at least they do match the pairs of wooden cups (or match the pieces of wood into pairs before they are processed into cups). It does look like there will be pretty big variations in lightness and hue (reddish <-> earthy) though.

It's wood, so you really can't tell the tree to grow a specific color...  So that might be a tough thing to do.  As long as the left cup looks like the right cup, then that's all really matters.  Also keep in mind that pictures tend to have lighting issues (so even the pictures may not be portraying colors properly).  And even if the picture is perfect, is your monitor?

Wow I have to say, after looking at this pic,
the visual memories of the oppo are fading away...

Nice photo Jerg. I for one am glad you spotted the baffle thing this early on. I think Fang responded ninja quick on that issue. Bravo Fang and the engineering team at HifMan! And the great thing is that the fix was fairly easy to implement. Are you going to rip the grills off your new pair again?

Do you think the grill mod is necessary or just a preference?

From what I read (I haven't read every post he made), but the baffle mod allows the headphones to successfully go down to the 20 Hz mark, without it, they roll off earlier.  Unless you like rolled off bass, I think it's not preference. Don't quote me on this though.

I thought he said that the grill was resonating/vibrating or something with sound (audible)...  I could be off still XD I only was able to read short excerpts while I was on break from class XD

In the photo you are looking at the grills were already replaced lol.

I can foresee people having more difficulty regrilling HE560s though. With this unit, the area where the grill / retaining ring slots in is a hair larger than the previous HE560 I had on hand, so friction alone isn't doing a great job at holding the retaining ring in. Temporarily I'm adding some small strips of electrical tape in there to grip the retaining rings but in the long run some sort of wood glue might be needed, or modification to the retaining ring.

I firmly believe that as long as the driver doesn't need some special damping in the back, the regrilling mod is a direct improvement to the sound without any downside sound-wise. It just adds clarity, nothing else. That is why it's somewhat debatable if it is perfect on HE6s, because those have some heavy damping materials in the back which dwarf the effects of the stock grills. People who do re-grill HE6s just get rid of all that damping too though, and the general consensus seems positive.

As for HE560, it doesn't come with any damping material, so the grills can go no questions asked.

The grills / grill cloth has a mild but noticeable reflective effect on the sound (don't forget, planars produce sound almost symmetrically forward and back, so tons of sound is pumped from the drivers toward the grills, and with the restrictive stock grills + grill cloth, a lot of that bounces back) and this backwave gets mixed in with the direct stream of sound from the drivers to the ears, net result = less clarity and soundstage feels more cramped.
