What other Open back headphones are in the same class as the HD600/650?

As the title said, I'd like to find out what other phones are in the same class as the HD600/650. Any input would be very much helpful

Beyerdynamic DT880 definitely are.

I found that the AKG K601 (now called the K612 Pro) was almost as good as the HD600, but not quite. It is considerably cheaper though ...

I have a thing for HD600 so I think there's really only one other in its class: K501.

Back in the late 90s, the most common alternatives to HD580 were K501 and DT880. Later, Beyer again came out with a 600 ohm version of DT880 and AKG replaced K501 with K701 frown.gif.

Based on your intention: K50x, K7xx, DT880, HE400, HE500, HD580.

Cheap alternative is the K612 pro

Others headphones in that 'tier' would be: AKGK701/702/Q701, Beyer ST880, Hifiman HE400, Shure SRH1440

Thank you for all the input everyone. Does the Beyer DT990 land in this category as well? I just wanted to clarify the headphones mentioned so far are they considered above, on par or a little below the HD 600 and HD650? I understand this is a very subjective problem but just curious as to what others think, especially since Senns are about $100-150 more expensive than currently mentioned headphone alternatives.

I've directly compared the HD600 to:

HD600 vs. DT880 - different flavour of sound, but I'd say they're on the same 'level'.  There are plenty of in-depth comparisons out there if you're interested ...

HD600 vs. AKG K601/612 - Quite a similar sound (both are on the warm side of neutral with excellent mids) For me the HD600 was the better headphone, but not by much.  If money was short, I'd be satisfied with the AKG.

Never tried the DT990 as its sound signature (emphasised bass+treble) doesn't appeal to me.

Most of them are on par with the Sennheisers, and it will be a matter of preference. I wouldn't compare DT990 with HD6x0; that's a different sort of sound.

Yep. And because of their bass/treble emphasis, you might like the DT990s better. Or not. The DT990 250 Pro certainly are cheap right now. Would only cost you $10 or $12 of return shipping to send them back to Amazon. I happen to think that "demoing" headphones that way is worth the cost because, if nothing else, it's fun smily_headphones1.gif

Also, the Q701s are a great price right now. They have a different sound from the Senn HD series (and from the DT990s) that you might fall in love them as well.

Not sure what criteria you are using to define class... but at any rate the K701/2, SR325i-RS1 I think are all in the same league.  K101, HD650 and RS1 are my 3 most heavily used cans, and I would not be able to pick one clearly over the other.  They all have completely different strengths and weaknesses.

If you have the amp for it, the HE 4 should be on par with HD 6xx series if not better for around the same price

ZMF version 2 is very reminiscent of a closed back HD650, better air and bass response.

I agree that the ZMF line is reminiscent of HD650 (as well as HE500), but open beats closed . . . though the ZMF Turbo flagship did sound like a game changer.

Yeah, they are not open, but as you know, they sure sound open.

Have you considered the Sony MA900's? They're a bit cheaper at around $200, far more comfortable, and regarded by quite a few people to be superior to the Sennheiser 6** line. They do not need to be amped.
