Hm, I would prefer something out of the box. Somehow I'm pretty sure that if I tried to mod something I would end up with broken unusable headphones :)

Look into the AKG K550s. Good bass extension, but less bass emphasis than the M50s. A very big soundstage for a closed headphone that is closer to that of an open headphone.

I'm looking at the M4U 1 at the moment. Reading more reviews my price acceptance is increasing :)

All right, here I go again. Since my price acceptance rocketed to outer space I ended up buying me the Ultrasone Edition 8. Call me insane but I have no buyer's remorse. I'm in love, they are fantastic :)

I actually tried the HD600 and was very pleased with them but the sound leakage was unacceptable to one of my colleagues so had to find something closed. I was then considering the mad dogs, then alpha dogs, but with their price tag of around $600 for modified $100 cans (plus additional shipping and tax and so on) I decided to give them pass and take a look at something serious in that price range. The 8s were actually way above that price range but they had good references in tests: http://www.testberichte.de/p/ultrasone-tests/edition-8-testbericht.html. Yeah, I read some reactions here as well but decided to give them try and so far I'm very happy with them. Some are complaining that they are bass heavy but I don't feel that way. Actually one of my colleagues marked them as bassless :D Well, compared to M50s the bass is not that present. And the sound quality and stage are miles away compared to M50s. OK, maybe there are some better cans for that price but at least I have something high-end to compare to. So I consider these as a good benchmark. I hope I will find something that sounds comparably great and costs less and will then sell the 8s.

Great you found something good though
