SABRE DAC which version to buy

Hi, I have a pair of audioengine2 speakers. While i am satisfied with them  but after 2.5 years you would want more. So the first question is will they respond positively from a dedicated source, currently i am using onboard supply of Sony laptop.

I don't have much budget because these things are costlier in India. So shortlisted 3 versions of HifiMeDiy Sabre USB DAC. Please help me selecting one which sis good enough. Unnecessary features are not required.

1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HiFimeDIY-Sabre-Tiny-USB-DAC-Digital-to-Audio-Converter-ES9023-PCM2706-/141069462952?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20d8652da8  costs $31.99+ 10

2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hifimediy-Sabre-USB-DAC-ES9023-TE7022-96khz-24bit-96-24-usb-to-optical-/141141156007?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20dcab20a7  costs $45 +10

3. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HiFimeDIY-Sabre-U2-Async-DAC-ES9023-SA9023-96khz-24bit-Asynchronous-USB-DAC-/141157869518?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20ddaa27ce  Costs $59+10

Third version is about twice as costly as the first, Will i get twice the sound quality out of them.?

I use wasapi from foobar, windows 7 at 16bit, 44100hz oif that matters. Namaste

Twice the sound quality? Probably not. How good the sound improvement will be is relative to your personal tastes anyway, so no one can predict that for you.

Also, you might want to research in the Dedicated Source Components forum. That's typically where people are discussing external DACs.

Do you notice any difference in the sound from your laptop when it is powered only by the battery, as opposed to when it is being powered by a/c adapter ?

(I also have a set of the A2)

The first one is intended for portable use with a smartphone.  The 2nd one is the same as the third just with an older usb receiver chip and no asynchronous usb operation.  If you can afford it get #2 or #3

edit: I have one of these and it's a great cheap entry level dac

@Uncola, Thank you i have ordered #2 and saved $15 in the process, waiting for it to arrive around April 10th. Just one more query, WIll A2s really benefit from DAC, i have a sony viao laptop with realtec chip inside.

@Nagual Never tried that way, and i don't have a battery , system runs directly on AC. bit weird it is

Coming from an integrated audio chip such as realtek, yes. There's an improvement with the Hifimediy.

Hey, My humble looking DAC arrived today.

Hooked it up. Good amount of difference is there in terms of resolution, separation, sound stage and bass is more punchy. The sound is more enjoyable. But its not night and day, though its only been half an hour of play.

In fact, given that, imho,  the sound of the Realtek are not so bad, I think these are  good news !   Seems to me too, the performance of these boxes improves when they are spcaced at least 30cm from the wall, and at the same height of our ears (as I´ve read in several other foruns)..

Waiting for further considerations !

My DAC arrived yesterday !  Now I understand the meaning of "humble looking", lol ... On the other side,  now bass is more present, and definitely I can hear details I could not hear before,  in the same recordings.  At first, I found the sound a litle harsh, but after installing the TeralinkX2 driver, (in compatibility mode,  as I´m running W8.1 64), this feeling has disappeared.

In short, I´m very happy with the sound upgrade (even more, because it has not been taxed by the customs ).
