Starving Student Looking for Best Portable Setup - CLAS -dB, The National, W1000x/ W5000/ T5p

Hi all,

I'm running low on money, as all of you have probably experienced with this little hobby :), but I'm on the last stretch of what I think will turn out to be quite a good portable/home setup. Right now I have ALO The National on the way, I have my CLAS -dB, and as of the moment am listening to my Audio-Technica W1000x. I'm going to upgrade my headphone to either the W5000 or the Beyerdynamic t5p, and I'm asking for help about which might suit my musical preferences better.

So, I'll briefly describe my experience with my w1000x for context:

I mainly listen to electronic music like XXYYXX, Apparat, Ratatat, and Grimes. But I also like faster bands like The Blood Brothers and The Mars Volta. However, I also love female vocalists such as Mirah.

Since the purchase of my w1000x, my interest in classical, female vocals, and some trance music has gone up because they sound so dynamic and real on these cans. One thing I'm wondering is if I will lose that realism with the t5p.

However, I have listened to the Mars Volta and such music a lot less since my w1000x, because fast metallic music just sounds too harsh on these things, as the treble feels particularly bright and forward. I've read that the t5p also has this quality, but I'm wondering with the clearer presentation if this will be less of a problem. I also wonder how much the wooden cups on the w1000x mar the clarity of this faster, more forward music.

I think for my general musical preferences, the t5p will be the winner, but just wanted some feedback...has anyone compared these three cans? Or has thoughts on the dac/amp pairing?

One last thing - the one thing I very much hope I won't lose by switching to the t5p is the realism conveyed by stringed instruments on the Audio-Technicas. To my ears, this is in all likelihood a result of the wooden enclosure, and the "shape" of the AT sound signature, which if you listen to classical music or acoustic music, will blow your mind. Everything else sounds slightly bloated or imbalanced.

Thanks All!

Best,

Daniel Anderson

The W1000x has a much different sound signature than the W5000.

Anyone who owns the t5p that would like to comment on its synergy with the CLAS-dB and ALO The National? Does my music taste seem good for it?
