Hifiman he-400 upgrade

Thread Starter

I've come to realise I can't live with the harsh occaisionally even sibilant sound that my he-400's make with most genre's of music

the speed and clarity and tight percussive bass and soundstage are fantastic though - definitely a step up from anything else i've owned (hd 595, Hd 280, shure se215, fostex tr50p)

so I was wondering what people who may agree with me about the flaws of this headphone would recommend as an upgrade (I know alot of people would completely disagree with my opinion of the sound)

I have tried many different amplification/sources (vinyl, flac through an RME fireface/biifrost)and the only sort of acceptable combo I have found is the little-dot mkiii with russian tubes - but then it sounds kind of dull - with vali or magni it sounds fast and present and mostly realistic but just too bright

i'm guessing he-500 or he-4 - or should I wait for the new models

i'd considered mad dogs, i'm hesitant because the (self)modded tr50p I had I thought sounded boring (but at that stage I only had the little dot which may not have had enough power to drive them)

I could maybe stretch to lcd-x or he6 if someone was very convincing

You can get a pair of He-500's for really cheap right now. They're also really great for modding.

The LCD-X probably could deliver slightly better dynamics than the He-500's, they'll should preform the same in terms of detail retrieval, and speed, that's if they sound anything like the LCD-2's (they should). The graph for the LCD-X seems a bit U-shaped, with a nice trench at 3-4K, so harshness and sibilance shouldn't be a problem at all. I haven't heard the HE-6 yet, but I've heard that they need a monster amp.

Generally, you shouldn't trust much of what people say on how something sounds, but I do highly recommend the HE-500's if you like a warm sound with smooth treble (it's something everyone on here can agree).
