Removing cloth from the HD598 is it a good idea?

I love how this **** looks http://cdn.head-fi.org/a/ae/aee089ab_e762437e_Headphone2.jpeg The original post didn't give too much info on how to do it and how it affects the headphones, what do you guys think? From what I read in the original post it opens up the soundstage and makes them slightly harder to drive, can you concur? should i do it? (I'm by no means an audiophile, these are my first real pair of cans.)

Anything helps!

I prefer to keep my cans stock.  But that's just me.

My 598s work just fine the way they are. Oh, and I like seeing the Sennheiser logo thru the wireframe. Its one of the many reasons I bought them.

Yes, this is very bad idea!!!  it will take treble off and detail, (however if you think they have some splash characteristics this will dissappear) I have significant experience modding HD558, 598 and best I can tell you keep your 598 stock.

Very best

I liked the change in sound that I got from removing the thin cloth and plastic grill behind the metal grill. The sound stage got a little wider and the sound was more balanced. Give it a try and if you don't like the change, put the cloth back in.

My old HD555 (same drivers as the 598)

"It is interesting to note that Sennheiser created the HD555, the HD558, and the HD598 out of the same driver and the same frame design. The only thing that differentiates them, seemingly are the grill portion, and in the case of the HD555 to HD558, the construction around the driver."

Never ever trust www.headfonia.com... I have purchased from Sennheiser both drivers, soldered it for couple of HD5** series and restored headphones hence I know what I am talking about bro :beerchug:

1. they have different part number

2. they are different physically

this is 5*5 driver http://mikebeauchamp.com/dump/hd555-vs-hd595/hd555-vs-hd595-open.jpg

this is 5*8 driver http://cdn.head-fi.org/f/f7/500x1000px-LL-f7c71cf2_oldhd558driver.jpeg don't mind some dirt I tried to apply some felt for modification :)

I have the 515, 555, 595 and 598 and they all sound slightly different.  Maybe its the enclosure or maybe it is the slightly different drivers but to my ears, they do not all sound the same.

I don't think the OP should be asking for opinions on the matter, just do the mod and if you don't like it, reverse it. That's the only way to find out if it's something you want.
