Hi, with all due respect these are polls you got off of a forum that is primarily headphone oriented so of course they will be skewed towards headphone/portability use.  But the fact that at least 22% of the people who voted 100% desktop on a headphone forum should speak quite a bit to you (not to mention there are a few posts from people on here asking that you leave out the head phone amp and other doo-dads should say something as well).  Say you posted this on Steve Hoffman's forums which is more 2.1 channel stereo and home theater based I'm thinking you may get different results.

I'm not saying that you should change the specs for this particular device as that would be ridiculous at this point, however what I'm trying to say is that there is a market for a statement DAC sans headphone jacks and other doo-dads that can fit in somebody's audio rack and their entire digital system could be centralized around it such as PS Audio's PWD or DirectStream, Rega's DAC, etc. However iFi kicks butt in price catagories and your strong point is performance/price that the others IMO don't match.  That's all I'm saying ... ;)

See below for upcoming top of iFi DACs.  And as far as TOTL full rack size standalone DACs, they technically already make this: http://www.amr-audio.co.uk/html/dp777_individual.html  Based on what I've heard of their entry level stuff, I can only imagine how much I would like that one, if I could ever afford it.

3) A "statement" Desktop DAC will become available with the iDSD mini this year and it will be quite something else...separate thread.

You mean the AMR DP-777?

Yes, indeed that would be very nice!

No, not the AMR DP-777 that thing is priced too high (although I'm sure quite a statement piece) but you guys (iFi) are the more budget oriented offspring, so a DAC from you.  Cut out all the extras such as head amps and possibly use FPGAs rather than Sabre chips, nice half width chassis, balanced and unbalanced outputs, etc. and keep the price iFi style maybe $500 - $1000 max.

they already don't use sabre in their iDSD line of products...but as they've already said many many times despite your constant whinnings, the mini iDSD will be their ~$1000 DAC. no idea if it will have a headphone output (i'm guessing it will), but there you have it.

Little bit touchy there ... I was replying to the post on which they directed me to the AMR which is not what I was talking about or giving feedback on.  Don't get your panties all wad up. If you don't like my post feel free to ignore them.

What is interesting about the DP-777 is that some of its technology has trickle down to the Nano and micro iDSD. That helps to lower the development costs down a bit. If IFI can come out with the micro iDSD in July that would be a incredible short development cycle time to production!

Aw, somebody's feelings were hurt and now he has to resort to name calling.

Name calling?

When I read the AMR webpage for the DP-777  The Organic Digital Algorithm incorporating SMART® and the Zero Jitter Mode just makes good sense approach to making a good DAC product. I quessing that that the mini iDSD, a later product will have more network features rather than the standalone island approach of the DP-777. Time will tell. I am waiting to see how the micro will turn out.

Designer's Diary (3)

Okay, we have been lying low but behind the scenes we have been really jammed out on the micro iDSD prototypes.

One of these we expect to ship to Japan for the upcoming Headphone Festival 2014 Spring by FUJIYA-AVIC (10th-11th May)

Then afterwards, another prototype will be at Munich High-End 2014 (15th-18th May)

Here are 3 prototypes that we are running right now.

Thorsten and his team have provided this update. They asked us to relay this on.

Specifically, the parts quality is going to quite impressive. We can confirm:

  • Tantalum Oxide Thin Film thin film surface mounted resistors - these offer ultra-low noise/distortion
  • TDK high stability C0G surface mounted capacitors - the C0G dielectric closely approaches Teflon(R) (which is pretty ideal)
  • Panasonic PolyPhenylene Sulfide stacked film surface mounted capacitors – Panasonic has a justified and enviable reputation for great-sounding capacitors
  • 4-Layer Board using oxygen-free copper traces with gold-plating - pretty much the highest-quality but also a costly approach

More soon!

Great to see progress with the prototype and high quality parts in the built. Is that "issue" wit the overheating IC fixed?

Good question!

Just asked one of Thorsten's guys. They are still working on cracking that little nut.

Will chase 'em for an update tomorrow.

From the software side, the USB3.0 hiccup with some newer Macs and Win PCs is nearly at the end of beta testing with the nano iDSD users who have this hiccup. So, by the time the micro iDSD is out, we dont see why it shouldn't be compatible with ALL USB3.0 ports from day one.
