Dear IFI-Team, this was the fastest reply I ever got in my live, thanks a lot! Also thank you very much for the great support!

Your answer makes it much more clear for me ("I do not have to care about the battery"), and that is great. However, I have one additional question: I will use the DAC only at home, therefore I think I do not even need the battery (maybe except for the - I forgot the name - extra boost I could get for my headphones..).  If I do not charge the battery (I am very lazy and I know that I will forget to switch on/of the DAC in order to charge it), will there be any problems?
Thanks!

Hi,

Simple answer - a big nope!

Worst case, you get a new battery from us but only contact us in 3-4 years' time because your battery wont need to be replaced until then.

Any ideas where we can preorder in the US?  I contacted both the vendors mentioned earlier in the thread and got the same response (i.e., "iFI has not yet shared preorder information with us").

Take my money!  LOL

Hi,

By all means pay a deposit but dont pay the full amount until the unit is ready to ship to you from the retailer. We dont like that kinda thing.

We just tried to telephone Avatar Acoustics (iFi North America distributor) but couldnt get through.

You can reach them on:

+1 (678) 817 0573
or
DCensullo@avataracoustics.com

If you still struggle, PM us and we'll organise on your behalf.

Thanks.

Oddly enough, I found about Octo on facebook.

I would like to know what system requirements for computer for DSD512 are - I have seen it as an option in foobar2000, but did not anticipate to see actual hardware to be available so soon.

As there are no recorders (A/D) available commercially, and DSD256 is only supported by Merging Horus and of recently its son,  Hapi, I am interested if you have plans to also venture into A/D part of the DSD develiopment/progress - at iFi prices. DSD256 recordings, the real ones that did not start their lives at some lower resolution, are still scarce and for all practical purposes, nonexistant. I find therefore DSD512 capable DAC a bit like putting the cart in front of the horse - but appreciate its inclusion to ascertain future proof status of the micro nevertheless.

Hi,

Computer audio is advancing like the proverbial and much faster than vinyl or CD ever did. We all need to be on our game.

Just checked and iFi Skunkworks says no comment on the ADC. You need to PM us to take this offline and you also need to be a member of the iCLUB.

Bty, this is Technoboys Pulcraft Green-Fund Quad DSD256 recording by Ryo Shimada of iFi-Japan along with the micro iDSD on the front cover of the latest Net Audio magazine.

TPGF became famous when they made movie soundtracks for several anime movies.

This fall, we know some studios in Japan will commence Octa-Speed DSD512 recordings, hence this is why we have moved to jump ahead. It helps if you have the in-house technical ability to do so! Now you know why we published the hardware+software technical notes.

Normally, it is the studios who are ahead of the game but for once the audio industry has stolen a march. And of course don't forget PCM768.

We meant it when we said we do care about the whole playback chain!

You can have both obviously... But making a dac that sound musical is much harder making a dac that supports new formats. Listen with Chord Hugo, for instance. CD sounds better on Hugo than 192 khz or DSD on other dacs.

I'm not sure high speed DSD will sound better in and of itself. I don't think high bitrate PCM is audibly distinguishable, either. But what I like about these formats is that engineers and sound techs are putting more care into the mastering process, and that's what excites me most. Looking forward to the micro in a few weeks.

Yes but we should hope they just don't upsample CD quality and present it to us as dsd/high bitrate PCM (which sounds worse than CD). After all, we don't know what goes on in the kitchen when we go to a fancy restaurant, do we?

Of course. That's given. We hope that formats are kept native as much as possible.

Dear iFi... I would like to know what will be included in the box with the iDSD?  Also did you mention a bonus to users who purchased first iDSDs in stores?

  Nice!

iFi Club?!?!  What a cool idea.  I am a big fan of how iFi Audio has decided to design and release the iDSD Micro.  These days, product releases rarely turn out as fun and on schedule like the micro has (knock on wood).  We are almost there.
