Replacing heaphones drivers?

Thread Starter

How easy, risky and worthy is it to buy a set of headphones and have their drivers replaced? I'm considering to do so, but I'm worryied about damaging them irreversibly, expences and just the time to find someone who can do it well. Have you tried it? What do you recommend?

And what drivers do you think could match or excel (for instance) the Sennheiser HD 500 series, ATH-M50, AKG K518LE, etc.?

Thanks!

I think its totally worth the efforts overall.  The knowledge gained with trial and error, tweeks and the likes is priceless.  like don't place your HD600 driver next to metal tweezers.. the magnetic force will attract the tweezer and crush the diaphragm.  $$ lesson learned the hard way.  Or don't run your OP amps at improper gain as recommended by the manufacturer... DC oscillation is a NASTY little bugger.

A good percentage of the forum is dedicated to mods and DIY tweeks and builds.
