I'm really happy with my current setup, but I'm always focused on what I'm going to get next, instead of being satisfied with what I currently have.  That being said, if I like lots of bass and want to step it up a notch, what do you guys think should be my next purchase?  I don't really have any requirements other than they need to be circumaural and fit a large head/ears.  I mostly listen to chill trance and chillstep, with the occasional hip hop.

I far as I recall there have not been many 'bass-heavy' headphones past the DT 770 Pro in terms of pricing. Most tend to be much more laid back (such as the HD 650). However, I have heard good things about the bass response on the HE 400, but those are really hard to drive. What's your source/amp?

Right now my sources are my HTPC running XBMC connected to an Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver and my gaming PC with a Creative Sound Blaster Recon 3D Fatal1ty Professional with a JDS Labs Objective2 amp.

I have heard conflicting information regarding whether the DT 770's or the DT 990's have more bass.  I went with the 990's because I generally prefer open headphones, but  I would be up for trying the 770's.

I'm assuming my current amps wouldn't be able to run the HE400's?

I have a feeling like the HE 400s would be fine with an O2, but it also depends on how loud you play your music. I haven't heard the DT 990s but the 770s have quite quite quite a lot of bass.

Actually, imo, it depends which version you have of the DT770. The 80 ohm version seems to have more bass than the 250 ohm version. I quite like the 250 ohm version and it is a good workhorse tbh. Treble can be quite strong too though.

I wish I could try a pair of the 80 ohm DT 770's in person to compare them to my 990's.

stv014 had this to say:

Both the DT770 and DT990 have emphasized bass and treble with good extension, and relatively recessed mids. The main difference is that the former is closed (isolates noise), while the latter is open (clearer and more spacious sound, but leaks and does not isolate). Also, the bass response is different, the 990 has a hump centered at about 100 Hz, so it is "punchier", while the 770 emphasizes mainly deeper bass ("thump") around 40-50 Hz. Of the two versions of the DT770 Pro, the 80 Ohm one is said to have more bass, while the 250 Ohm version (I only have that) is brighter.

Anybody in Denver?  :D

He-400 is not hard to drive, as i recall they are designed to be easy to drive. Sounds fine with my Modi/Magni. IMO, chillstep, trance sounds pretty good with the HE-400, but if you want more hard hitting bass, maybe you should go for something like the Ultrasones. How do you like your XB700? I heard it has insane amount of bass. Anyway, go check out the basshead page, you will find what you need.

The XB-700's are pretty good.  I use them at work and they definitely have a good amount of bass, but I honestly think my properly driven DT 990 250 ohm's have more bass.

I will look into the Q40's and the basshead page.

I keep hearing people saying the Sony's XB series have crazy bass, especially the 500 and 700. I do believe the 990 have better bass in terms of quality though.
