Should I get a dac+amp or a dap?

Hi everyone,

I am using HTC One and Sennheiser ie80 now. I am looking for a dap/dac+amp which I can use connected to my laptop and carry it outside. Should I get a Fiio E18/iBasso D42 which can be connected to my phone and laptop or a Fiio x3 which can be used as a usb dac? My budget is around US$250.

Thanks a lot.

I would say to get the FiiO X3 use it for music files instead of the HTC One.

Also plug the FiiO X3 into the laptop when you want to play audio from your laptop.

I have a HTC One S and rarely used it for music although the quality is pretty good, but the battery isn't. So I opted for a portable dap. Now I pre ordered the fiio x5, so I suggest you to get the x3 :-)

I am already using my HTC One but the output power is not great (to drive IE80).

I am wondering whether a portable dac+amp will give me a better quality and power than a dap like Fiio X3.:confused_face_2:

Well I know Fiio does very good quality dap but would a dac+amp be better?

You might be able to boost the headphone power output on the HTC One.

Check out CyanogenMod

For an external DAC/amp, maybe(?) the FiiO E18 might work for you.

I am not ready to root my phone because I still have warranty.

I am considering E18 but is it better than x3 in terms of sound quality and power output?

The FiiO X3 is based on the E17

The X3 and E17 and E18 both use the WM8740 DAC chip, but i believe the E18's headphone amplifier is more powerful.

So if I am just considering output power and sound quality, should I get the E18?

I believe the FiiO E18 was designed to work with smart phones (and computers/laptops), so I would "assume" the E18 would be able to connect digitally, with USB, to the HTC One.

So I would say the E18 seems to be a good choice.

Thanks a lot. I think I will go for E18.

Please read up on the E18, I just do not know for sure which smart phones it does and does not work with.

Also you might want to check out the CyanogenMod, for use with your HTC One.
