Source Upgrade Suggestions

So guys... Some questions to help find me a DAC upgrade:

Currently running:

Audeze LCD-3's, HD800, Fostex TH-900

Auralic Taurus for Amp

Schiit Gungnir for DAC

In the future will be adding ALO Audio Studio Six as an amp, plus HE-6 - but that is another story.

The Gungnir is great.. don't get me wrong - but i am looking for more;

I have narrowed down a few options;

But for comparisons sake.... (can't disclose my pricing!)

The PWD MKII i can get for say 100% of cost.

Then for around 15-20% more i can get an auralic taurus;

But then the Master 7 would end up being 10% more than the PWD MKII for me..

So it ends up being;

PWD MK II - 100%

Master 7 - 110%

Auralic Vega - 120%

I have narrowed it down to those three really..

---

Now what i am looking for;

With the studio six will bring a bit of warmth into it but i am really wanting neutrality with a slight tilt towards warmth - i don't want any extra brightness or harshness added in to the fray.

I am finding the Gungir is great for this although lacking somewhat overall? (I may need to compare the DAC's really - but won't be able to listen to the Master 7)

I have read the ranking of 21 dacs by purrin and this is what has bought me to these DAC's above.. help!

Any suggestions would be great - thanks in advance!

I have two solid recommendations but before that, could you elaborate a little bit more on what you feel is lacking about the Gungnir?

Hmm well for me i think it doesn't quite have the detail or sparkle i sometimes want on the top end and can become slightly etchy every now and then (this may be too do with music quality though)

I also feel like the bass could be tighter and extend lower..

Is it the Gen 2 USB version? If not, it's a relatively cheap upgrade that could do wonders for your sound across the board. Otherwise:

If you're looking for something with a similar signature to your Gungnir, I'm thinking the BDA-2 by Bryston would be a solid upgrade (same dual AKM4399 configuration). I haven't personally heard it, but it's got quite a number of glowing reviews, and would probably be a great match-up for the LCD3 and HD800. Feel free to glance over the impressions here.

On the flipside, if you're aiming for technical perfection, I say go for the Benchmark DAC2. It's a brilliant little beast, just a teeny bit south of neutral in that it brings back some of that smoothness in the treble. An engaging yet non-fatiguing sound, which is rare for these Sabre DACs.

Hmm good suggestion thanks will take a look - I have listened to the BHA-1 and found it a bit bright and foward to my liking - does the DAC have the same signature?

I am running optical on the gungnir at the moment - is the USB much better?

Definately not aiming for technical perfection - more so enjoyment than anything else.

Only issue with the bryston is size; it is physically quite large but could still manage if it is indeed as good as you say; my price on the Bryston would be around the same as the PWD2

Have you compared the bryston to the afformentioned DAC's at all?

Nope, never had the chance to do a comparison unfortunately!

And yes, the new USB input in the Gungnir is very exceptional. See if you can make out a difference by swapping connections.

Your adding more options to make it even more confusing for me! :P
