Headphones for home listening - Sennheiser, Focal, AKG

Hi Everyone

I'm looking for headphones for home listening and would like to consult the wisdom of the Head-Fi community. I would like headphones for home listening which will deal well with classical music (including a good dose of music for solo voice and piano, as well as big symphonic repertoire), with some jazz thrown in, too. Electronica, hip-hop etc don't really form much of my listening diet. I have a hi-fi system, consisting of Rega Dac, Rega Mira amp, Focal 714v speakers. I'm expecting to use my laptop as a source chiefly, but also stream some music from a Nexus 7 / smartphone. I appreciate that amplification will be a question, too.

I've done a bit of research and models such as the Sennheiser HD650, AKG 702 and Focal Spirit Classics seem interesting, but I'd really appreciate your advice and guidance. If you know of a particularly successful combination of headphones and amplifier for my sort of listening, I'd love to hear about it!

I use Meelec A151 earbuds at work and out and about, and really enjoy the natural presentation I get from them.

Thanks very much indeed.

I find that HD600 works with the most subgenres because of its greater neutrality compared with the darker HD650, and its treble roll off compared with K702. K702, by comparison is a little more resolving, has a bigger soundstage, and sounds less enclosed. Honestly, all three are good choices for classical (and I have found that dynamic models are more engaging for classical than planars). An O2 can drive all three.

Thanks very much for your ideas. I'll do my best to audition them and see which I prefer.

Sure thing.

That's really the best way.

Edit: if you find K702 light in the bass, there's a bass mod.

Each one is a little different when it comes to comfort:

K702 has those eight bumps on the headband which bother some (the new ones coming from China don't have them).

The headband on HD600 is a little tight, but only a little.

The clamping force on HD650 is too strong but it can be carefully bent to be more comfortable.

But every one of those issues can be lived with or worked round, so sound preference will matter much more.
