For Sale:
[Price Drop] FS: Bottlehead S.E.X. v2.1 w/ C4S & Impedance Switch Upgrades - Free Shipping [ConUS-only]

Will Ship To: ConUS or cheaper Local Pickup

Recently-completed build of the Bottlehead S.E.X. v2.1 w/ C4S & Impedance Switch upgrades - price reflects replacement cost plus a modest finishing fee, buyer can consider assembly to be free.  Color scheme is a unique 'hammered natural/raw copper' custom topside paint finish that I designed myself along with a red mahogany base stain w/ semi-gloss poly seal.  Everything is stock build, plus small black spiked feet upgrade with cushioned pads for delicate surfaces - could also pretty easily add a 4-pin XLR chassis jack at the buyer's request.  Works very well and has seen very little use - only selling it due to my general collection sell-off towards more portable gear.  For sale only - no trades for now.

Has the potential to pair well with a wide variety of headphones due to the versatility provided by the Impedance Switch, but I would most highly recommend it for the mid-to-high efficiency planar magnetic headphone segment, particularly most any of the 35- or 38-ohm HiFiMAN planars (basically any but the HE-6) and possibly the LCD-2, along with your choice of high-efficiency stereo speakers.  Has seen highly-limited testing with low-impedance dynamics, so can't recommend it outright for those headphones if you don't also own a planar.

Listed price includes Free USPS Priority shipping to the ConUS only, and I will knock off roughly double the cost of shipping from the listed price to the right local pickup buyer (maybe someone with a planar headphone?...).  Depending on which PayPal payment method you use, maybe add $15 to help partially cover fees.  High selling preference for established members w/ ~100+ posts & 2+ positive feedback, though am willing to consider anyone and might make a particular exception for someone with a great buyer history (head-fi or eBay) and fewer posts.  Upon request, I can also link to my own flawless eBay profile & feedback history.

If you have any questions or want additional photos, please let me know - otherwise, please PM if interested.

Have you had the chance to compare this to the Emotiva with the HE-500? I see you have both for sale, could you comment on the differences and improvements?

That HE-500 listing is actually just waiting on delivery confirmation - already been sold.

I would answer by talking about the HE-4, which is what I really bought the Emotiva for and varied much more between the two amps:  Emotiva had the bass punch and higher-energy in the low mids, but by comparison had a warped soundstage and odd vocal effects compared to the more traditional presentation on the BH-S.E.X., which would win out in all other aspects other than bass punch and energy.  I dealt with the odd vocals and soundstage in the HE-4 + Emotiva [I think] only because I was usually listening to EDM w/out vocals and could thus train my brain to get used to it.  All factors considered, it was still by far the inferior planar amp.

Generally, the same differences could be said about the HE-500 pairings, but to a much lesser degree.  Personally, I think that with it's balance and warmth, the HE-500 deserves an amp like the S.E.X. much more so than the Emotiva, which does a neat trick as a starter combo solution, but in the end, it's really just a speaker amp.

I can't comment much beyond that - I probably hooked the HE-500 up to the Emotiva for only about a week of crossover before I got my HE-4, and the HE-4 was what covered primary duties for a couple months while the HE-500 stayed in the box.  I did one hour-long comparison session after finishing the S.E.X., but that was it.

Interesting, thank you for your explanation. I've ALWAYS looked for someone to compare the S.E.X. to the Emotiva and finally someone had the ability to do so :D

Unfortunately the S.E.X. is much out of my price range as a college student so the Emotiva will have to do :/ Any idea if the Quickie would provide good improvement on the Emotiva? Sonido claims it helps with adding more body to the mids and making the sound overall more spacial / 3D / less wonky.

The S.E.X. amp is very, very good.  Before I borked mine while trying to "upgrade" it, it paired very well with all orthos I tried on it, including the HE-6, as well as my HD800s.

Beautiful build, Raspiguy!  I might have to finally go back to mine and try to fix it.

No idea on the Quickie.  But I don't like the idea of buying & building it before you try it - seems like a stretch that that preamp could [magically] directly target/address the Emotiva's primary issues.  I would avoid and instead upgrade to a single amp that does it right on its own, once you're ready to take the leap.

Thanks, FraGGs.  Let me know if anyone you know in Chicagoland would want a nice deal on this - I can 'mod to order', possibly even bundle some entry-level speakers.
