$40-$80 headphones / BeyerDyanmic 501p vs JVC HA-S600

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a pair of headphones around $40-80.  I've seen good reviews for BeyerDyanmic 501p and JVC HA-S600 - I know they are different price range, but lots of people say HA-S600 is phenomenal for the price point - so it's hard for me to tell.

I use Sennheiser PX100 II at home, and love the deep tight bass, and wonderful clarity - I'd love something close to this sound.  However, I need closed back headphones for the train / bus on my commute to / from work.  I currently use Sennheiser HD228 and I'm not very happy with the sound.  It's quite muddy in the midtones, brittle high-end, prone to distortion (even at lower volumes), and has very little bass.  I need something closer to my PX100's with a smoother sound.  I don't like jangly audio. Does that make me a dark sound lover? :)

I missed a deal on ebay for the 501p's for $40 and now have dilemma of whether I need to fork serious cash - or whether the HA-S600's will do.  In case anyone suggests the obvious choice, I hated the Sennheiser PX200 II sound at the shop, I found they lacked the clarity and crispness of the PX100.  Or perhaps that pair just wasn't run-in enough?

I like acoustic guitar, folk, rock/pop, and the odd classical album - I also watch a lot of movies on the go.

Cheers in advanced for any advice!

Agreed. The HA-S500 are very good. Look into those.

Those are excellent headphones for the money. Some people might find them a little big for commuting. Otherwise, if you aren't concerned about that, definitely look into them.
