Hi Eke

I haven't read the entire thread and I have been drinking so I hope you will forgive me if this has been answered.

Do you find any DAC's significantly better than the iPod?

I have a Violectric V800 which I find to be very realistic and sublime. Then I have a CLAS -db which sounds great but, when the battery runs out, I am amazed at how close the latest gen ipod touch comes to it (using the same amp and headphones).

iPod touch is also the only player I have which doesn't hiss at all with my CIEMs (I have had tinnitus since I was very young so listen at very low volumes).

Maybe I am just wondering if it is the portables that are so bad, or if it is the iPod that you are finding so good.

Excuse the rambling. Thanks!

Hey,

My experience with DACs is more limited than my experience with headphones. However, there's only been one system that wowed me. It was an Oppo CD player at a meet recently. Caveat is that it wasn't my music, so I'm not sure if it was just the mastering of the song.

It's not that portables are bad, per se, it's just that expectations are extremely elevated due to hyperbole. I think a clip+ sound every bit as good as any top tier DAP if you don't need high driving power.

Hi, you should quote the post you are criticizing, as per now nobody can understand what you mean. I.e. does high res make a difference for you or not?

Yep, it's definitely an experience. I feel crazy for saying this, but $700 is quite the deal when you consider its feature set and price compared to other DAPs on the market. I think it's a much better device than the likes of the HM901 if you're only driving IEMs. Even then, you could add a small amp and still be around the same size ballpark of the HM901, but with a UI that's light years more advanced.

I'm not sure, but I think Sony has "lower end" devices that only differ in the amp section. Word on the street is that they sound exactly alike.

I think you are referring to the F886/7 player. Supposedly the differences are some of the internal components, such as electricals, capacitors, and the headphone port being a higher end brass unit. The S-Master amp section is the same if I recall correctly. The internal upgrades do add up to a small gain in SQ, but consensus is the F886/7 series is a very close sibling and gets you the essence of the ZX1 (and it would be a great choice if someone didn't want to spend the full price of the ZX1). With the higher price Sony you get the build quality/design, storage, and the minor bump on SQ.

Yes! I couldn't remember the name to save my life. I may or may not grab that or the ZX2 sometime in the future, just for the BQ and design.

My kids have Clips, even on redbook my Studios, DX50,601 and 901 stomp all over it. If you know

how music is meant to sound

Ever heard a real instrument in a studio?

:)

In what ways exactly? I've presented my case in the OP. What do you disagree with?

So we all have to fall in line with your opinion?  It's ok to disagree without the condescension. Bad show, I'll say no more in hopes the thread moves on.  :(

Blame it on the moon.....

Your arguments are invalid if you don't know what the source is meant to sound like in the first place. What are you comparing to ?
Blame the moon or blame people who can't appreciate good audio and therefore spread the mantra of ABI ie Clip is God
Clip is amazing value for money , but compared to a serious source it sounds poor.
