Just got some HD650's and ordered a modi&magni combo, but also found agard2 online for $199......

Hey everyone.

So I haven't found any solid answers online (maybe I'm not looking in the right places), but I've done quite a bit of research on the topic and I can't find any definitive answers to my question.  I bought a modi and magni combo from schiit earlier this week, but schiit also had the asgard 2 listed for $199 so I picked it up as well.  I'm waiting on all three to arrive but I was curious to see if anyone has had any prior experience with using the magni vs asgard2.  Any and all input is much appreciated.  This is my first thread on head-fi and I look forward to talking with everyone!  I can't describe what a huge help this forum has been.  Thanks in advance!! :)

No. I haven't heard the Magni (I own the Asgard 2 and got it as a replacement for the O2). But the Asgard 2 is the better rated amp of the two. Whether or not you'll notice any appreciable difference in audio quality is probably mostly dependent upon whether or not the Asgard 2 will drive your particular headphones better. If you don't have difficult to drive headphones, it may not matter.

Now one very good advantage of the Asgard 2 is the pre-outs. If you ever plan on getting speakers to hook up with your setup, a nice plus to be able to control the volume of your speakers and headphones through the Asgard 2.

Ok that brings up a solid question.  By speakers do you mean studio monitors?  Because I am definitely thinking about getting some studio monitors within the next 6 months.  I was thinking I was going to have to get an audio unit to go with the studio monitors though.  Something like the Focusrite Forte.. along those lines.  Thoughts?

If you buy the Asgard 2, you can plug any studio monitor up to it that has unbalanced outputs or you could convert balanced to unbalanced with an inexpensive cable adapter.

Just curious why you need the Focusrite Forte? Are you into studio recording/audio engineering?

No, not really recording but I do production work mainly through Abelton.  My buddy just got some A2's with the Focusrite Forte and he seems to like them.  I'm new to all of this so I'm still getting a feel for what I need.  I can tell you though, I just hooked up my M&M stack and the HD650's sound good so far.  Definitely need to be burned in a bit but I'm guessing in a day or so they'll be coming to life more and more

Ixnay on the A2s and the Focusrite Forte. Such an imbalanced pairing in terms of budget allocation. Your Modi plugged up to a good $500 set of speakers would sound much better than the A2s and the Forte. And that's like buying the Modi/Asgard 2 to use with $50 headphones (lol).

I did check out that thread in my searches lol.  The only thing that I can't seem to get an answer to is if the asgard2 and the modi are going to cooperate with each other.  I am getting the asgard tomorrow so I'll post which pair I think has the better sound after I compare them.  I'm assuming the asgard2 is going to be better than the magni, but you never know.  Maybe the Modi and the Magni were just meant to be together.

There's "no cooperation" necessary. I use an ODAC with my Asgard 2. Any good DAC will be fine to work with the Asgard 2.

A DAC like the MODI is already very accurate, transparent. The Asgard 2, as a solid state amp, is also very accurate, very transparent. So worrying about synergy between two very accurate devices doesn't make sense to me.

this is the kind of answer I've been looking for!  Like I said, I am extremely new to all of this, I have read on different threads that even the "usb cables" that you use can effect the sound, so I was thinking that the modi could somehow not "cooperate" with a different amp.  Thank you for the clarification though!  Much appreciated :) I am even more excited now to hear what the asgard brings to the table!

When comparing audio equipment like DACs and amps, people will try to tease out very minor differences that than seem like much more than they are when you read a review.

I wouldn't expect huge difference in SQ with the Asgard 2. I used to own the O2 (often compared to the Magni). The SQ difference was minor, if it all. Audio memory is so unreliable, we can easily convince ourselves that something is better.

The Asgard 2 has more power available for headphones above 50 ohms, so it may give the HD650s a little better dynamics at higher volumes. It has a gain switch, which can be helpful for some headphones with low sensitivity. As a Class A amp, it consumes a lot more power than the Magni and uses much of it regardless of the volume. So it's a heater in comparison; not very green friendly.

Love it as a pre-amp for my speakers. I run the output from the Asgard 2 to my sub, and then from the sub to the main in on my Harman Kardon receiver (bypassing the pre-amp in it). I *think* it sounds a little better than directly hooking up the ODAC to the pre-amp on the receiver; the soundstage with my speakers seems every so slightly expanded. And it's nice having that one volume dial on my desk; I like the big knob (the volume knob on the O2 was tiny--yuck!). When I plug in the headphones, it then bypasses the output to the speakers.

Well this brings an interesting variable into the equation.  I am definitely looking to get some nice studio monitors in the next couple months.  I feel like from what I have heard, the asgard will give me more options rather than keeping the magni.  I am a little confused on what you mean by "SQ" though? when you say the "sq difference." I honestly don't know what you are referring to friend.  I'm new lol...  Thanks in advance

SQ=sound quality smily_headphones1.gif

I don't see why you would need the Forte if you had the Asgard. I would definitely go that route and the put your budget into speakers smily_headphones1.gif

hahaha of course that is what sq means, we are on head-fi.  thanks a lot again I really do appreciate you're recommendations, i have a better understanding of what I need and what I can do.  I most definitely will be returning the magni and rocking out with the asgard for a while!!!
