Official 2014 SoCal Head-Fi Meet Impressions Thread - Page 6

I've been to so many of these meets and have heard so much by now that I try to look for gear combinations which just simply sound good (regardless of price, which means some $$$$ and some $ Let me mention a few of them. Synergy is everything! There were so many people that I didn't have time to hear everything, so I may have definitely skipped out on a few rigs.

LFF's Enigma and Cavalli Liquid Colbalt
Wow oh wow! I really really Alex's new LC amp. Paired with the Enigma, this was one which really surprised me at the meet. There was an LCD-2 right next to the Enigma. Guess what? The Enigma spanked the LCD-2 in every way, including bass performance. Yup. I couldn't believe it either.

OJ's CKKIII and AMB Gamma 2 + any headphone
This Gamma 2 build bypassed the ASRC and took the USB i2s directly to the chip. As I've indicated in my DAC comparo, the Gamma 2 is a really really good DAC worthy of being compared to many bigger desktop units. The CKKIII has an excellent reputation among DIY'ers.

Uzi's Bottlehead Crack w/ speedball + HD600
The Crack is well known to have excellent synergy with the HD650/600. But holy sh1t, the speedball upgrade really does bring some extra speed to those HD600s. Best I've heard the HD600s sound short of plugging them directly into leviathan, god, or titan amps.

The guys from Iriver / Astell&Kern were there. They had a balanced HD-800 with FBI copper cable there. I put on a Patricia Barber binaural track from the Accidental Powercut series of albums (Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound download) that was on my microSD card and I couldn't believe what I heard. I think I swore repeatedly in disbelief. I passed that rig around with that track and got equal looks of shock from various people. The streaming server was also the real deal -- they had all their demo AK240s streaming without hiccup or loss of quality from a single Mac.

Stupid question may be:  are the LFF's Paradox available for purchase ?  And does it isolate very well ?

Also, where can we download the Patricia Barber binaural track from the Accidental Powercut ?

thanks

The best part of the meet was when Currawong/Amos used his ninja skills to sneak up to Anaxilus and slapped a "banned" sticker on his back.

Another enjoyable meet with the group. Got to listen to a bunch of different things. Problem is... it was a blur. I don't have the mad skillz that many of you have here to break things down in such an environment. However, once I actually sit down quietly, and know what to look for... aside from that, good to talk and be with all the Head fi cats.

BTW: 2 days for next year! Too much for me to see it all.

Yeah, I don't have the pretty boy looks of OJNeg. I think Curra saw the "OJNeg" name plate and presumed it was the person it was next to. Mmm.. multi day meet. Curious how the logistics of getting that done would work.

Ah, and two words: Fiio guy.

Funny guy here! I just want my name in lights I guess. I'll bring a big poster of my face (like the vendors) next time so no one gets it twisted

Let me just add to the thanks to Ethan and Warren and the team for another great meet. I think that last two California meets have been two of the best I've been to.

There seemed to be a lot of new people there (at least new to me). It was great to meet as many as came to the CA table and to talk with you.

I guess I'll have to make this drive again.......

Dr. Cavalli gained notoriety with his first DIY amplifier projects. His success has blossomed into Cavalli Audio, a world leader in amplifier design.

Well, maybe not on the Stax, but you can buy that Dark Side of the Moon 5.1 surround mix Blu-Ray on Amazon: It's not cheap though since it's a boxed set with 6 discs or something.

Then to listen to it, you have to use Out Of Your Head software...:D

You'd be surprised how good it can sound even on a pair of Koss PortaPros!

That song was a big hit at my table.

I just wanted to thank everyone for such a great meet. It was SO busy at my table that I barely got one bathroom break and that was it. I didn't even sit or eat or even have a drink of water. I lost count at over 100 people demoing my software and amps, etc. (I gave away 105 stickers for the raffle). At one point my neighbor at the E.A.R. table next to me had to ask everyone at my table to move out of the way since no one could get to his table. Sorry!

It was great to be so busy, but sadly I didn't get to see or hear a single thing at the meet. I guess that's the curse of going to the meet as a vendor... I didn't even see the other rooms. But I really appreciate the photos so I can see what I missed.

But I loved doing all the demos. The best part was the reactions and looks on people faces when they heard my demo. Lots of people started looking behind them and turning their heads back and forth to figure out where the sound was coming from. Then they would lift up the headphones to see if the sound was really coming from the headphones. Priceless! I should create a surround demo file where a song starts playing and then have Jude yell at them from behind them. Everyone would jump out of their seats.

Seriously, meeting everyone was great. Thank you to everyone who stopped by my table and took the time to hear my software demo. I was pleased that many people told me that my software was the best thing they heard at the meet. (Maybe they were telling everyone that though.)

Not sure what people thought about the raffle system, but I thought it was a great way to do it. I think there would have been a lot fewer people demoing my software if it hadn't been for the raffle. Thanks Warren and Ethan, et al. for doing the raffle.

Awesome meet!

Fantastic meet! Thank you Ethan and Warren for organizing once again, and a special thank you to all who stopped by our table.

Second this. We didn't have time to take any breaks. It was very crowded, but fun.

We had a great time. I brought my 15 year old son and good friend Carlos. Both were shocked and impressed. The boy is ready to spend his college fund. Thanks to everyone who helped.

I had trouble keeping track of all the awesome equipment. As a younger man I built DJ equipment and owned a car audio company. This is a whole different world. It may be a dangerous addiction.

The downside is that now my DT-770 pros that I thought sounded good, just sound mediocre. My buddy Carlos made a similar comment, now he says everything he listens to sounds like crap. I kinda ruined him for beer and wine, so why not audio.

Thanks everyone.

That's how I felt

So happy with my recabled 600s and new amp/DAC and then you hear the stuff at the meet...

Even my JH11s which I thought I'd be happy with for ages, demoed the higher end ciems and now here I am, ordered 16s

Curse you headfi!

Edit: looking into a new portable stack setup now too. Oh dear
